What kind of mushroom is it and whether it is edible or not?

Any members here know what kind of mushroom is It?
3 years ago, I cut off a big digger pine tree near my house.
This morning, I discovered this beautiful golden mushroom under the trunk.

There are so many similar mushrooms that it would be hard to tell from your picture. Mushrooms arent something to take chances on.


A good rule of thumb is if you aren't sure what it is, don't handle and certainly don't eat it.

Take a picture of it with your cell phone and push the little “i” icon. It will instantly identify the little mushroom for you.

I checked the Golden Scalycap (Toxicity: Suspected to be toxic), Golden Pholiota (Toxicity: Generally considered inedible due to its bitter taste and potential toxicity) and the Jack-o'-Lantern Mushroom (Toxicity: Poisonous if ingested. It can cause severe gastrointestinal distress) none of them looks exactly like these and none of them are edible, but here how to narrow it down.

• Check for Gills: Are the gills running down the stem or free? This can help narrow down the species.
• Smell: Some have distinctive odors, like a sweet or fruity smell, while others have a musty scent.
• Spore Print: If you're unsure, taking a spore print can be helpful. Place the mushroom cap gill-side down on paper and check the color after a few hours.

If you’re planning to handle that mushrooms further, it's best to use gloves, as some mushrooms can cause skin irritation.

mushroom’s are finicky, some are eatable but can become poisonous after a certain point.

The ones from a store barely taste good. I like identifying mushrooms but decided not to forage them because at best they taste ok at worst I’m sick or dead.

The only ones I would even try in my area are morels and chicken or hen of the woods.

Man some of you fellers are really missing out. I frequently forage through my woods looking for wild mushrooms to eat. Some of the best eating ones are not commonly found at the grocery store. I recently came across these Elm Oyster mushrooms and fried the up. My boys and the girlfriend love the wild mushrooms.

But you do need to accurately identify whatever you eat. There are some deadly ones out there. But don't be afraid o handle them, touching them will not hurt you....

I have had the Shaggy Mane, there are good, but they are only eatable when they are early in their growth stage and need to be consume right away, once they get black they are no longer eatable, and to not be confuse with the Common Inky Cap which are also eatable but become poisonous if consume with alcohol, even if consume days apart.

Lots of eatable mushroom will have a poisonous near identical twin, so you need to be 100% sure of what you are doing, it's best to go a few time with someone that knows what he/she is doing before doing it on your own.

I forage for mushrooms. I have four eatable types around here. The others - I DO NOT fool with. Fortunately - Brownie will have nothing to do with ANY type of mushroom.

He gives me that look - "you are actually going to eat that fungus".
