I don't see this happening. At least around here, there are so many damn 5 foot brush hogs for sale on a routine basis, I don't see anyone ever even considering a much less common 48" in its stead. Because there are so many 5 footers out there, you can almost always find better options in that size, versus uncommon 4 footers.Also, let's say you want a 5 or even 6 ft bushhog, if priced right, and just personal, small scale use, many people would buy a 48", IF priced aggressive enough.
I could see those who really want 48" settling for a 5 footer that's too large for their machine, because that's all they can find. But not the other way around. When I had bought the 48" M4 for my Deere 855, I had been watching out for a good one at a decent price for 2-3 years. In that time, I'd passed up probably 50 or more 60" and 72" units.
