How many RPM did you have to run your tractor?
Do you know about how long it will run the generator on a tank of fuel?

It was just below the 540 PTO mark on the tach. Time....dependent on load fluctuations. Many hours possibly a day. I would need to consult the service manual which shows specific fuel consumption based on load/rpm.

I’ve only used it once for our home. I’ve used it numerous times remotely to run my welder and other power tools.

Too bad that you and fried are intimidated by educated and skilled persons . So much that you must purposely do the opposite as the pro’s advise just to prove yourselves . Then try a straw man theme as an attempt for credibility.
Still to what you know and leave electrical advice to those who k or what they are doing . Before you get someone injured or killed .

Yuk!

I see your still up to your old - you値l fry a lineman- fear mongering.

I know this is an older thread. Just wondering how a GC series tractor maintains the right RPM to keep a PTO generator at 60Hz when running unattended for hours at a time? I could be wrong but I think the speed control lever is just held in place by friction and there is no actual governor?

I see that the thread starter, GC1710, has not been active here for several years. I enjoyed his posts and I hope all is well with him.

I'm not aware of any "tractor" that doesn't have a governor. Even your lawn mower has a governor.

I always had to bump the throttle as I added load to my generator.

For my circumstance I chose spending 5k for a 16kw generac and home auto switch. I thought about getting a PTO Generator but chose the Generac for several reasons over the PTO generator.

1) Didnt want to tie up the tractor from other things like snow removal. Generator was 5k installed and is dedicated-has cold weather package and runs on unlimited natural gas.
2) did not want to leave tractor running overnight
3) Takes time to warm up tractor, connect and fuel up.
4) My tractor and implements cost me around 25 grand not including PTO generator and hookup to house if I got one. Generac was 5.5k hooked up including house autoswitch. Generator has 10 year warranty-when it goes I just buy a new one for 1500 to 2500, hookup is already there.
5) Generator is always waiting and it exercises itself bi - weekly.
6) Diesel is more expensive than NG and I dont have to store gallons on site and dont have to worry about gelling or treating. I dont have to fuel up every 12 hours and I can run my Generac for several days without needed downtime.
7) love my MF too much to leave it outside in bad weather or for thieves to come get.
8) If im on vacation and power goes out whos gonna setup my MF and run it? My hot tub would freeze up, my pipes would burst.

Nice backup plan option for me but for now Im good with just the Generac.
a new 16kw (18kw now) generac is probably closer to 4000+ now adays plus installation. however, i agree on the idea of not wanting to tie up my tractor. i went standby myself (22 kw) for several reasons. first and foremost....it cost me nothing. i sold and installed generacs for many years. i had enough purchase credits (free items for large orders) that mine cost me nothing, cept my own labor.

but main reason i dont want the wife to have to mess around hooking the tractor up to a pto unit if im not around the property.

in the winter, i have to move snow, and thats when we have our most power outages. i also shut mine down manually for periods during long outages.

That’s what I figured. So for a fairly constant load it should work OK once the throttle is adjusted.

I very seldom adjust my throttle once I'm set, I'm running a 25Kw and it just powers along as the load varys I may see a 1 Hz change and a couple of volts but nothing to go out and adjust for.

Same here Lou, my 15kw just sits and makes good power and the tractor governor adjust itself as needed.

Can anyone point me to the smallest KW output 4 pole pto gen.?

I've been looking at the 10-12 kVA range.

I may need to go larger.
