Had (red) fuel oil delivered this week for $2.93/gal. $.48 cheaper than ORD and $.98 cheaper than taxed diesel at the pump. Use it only for heating, tractors & generator.

That’s about what Im paying for “off road” diesel down here. I remember paying 1.79 about 4 years ago. Those were the days.

Our delivered "red" is still around $3.60 a gallon.

If it is 250 gallons or more, the distributor that I have been using for years waves the delivery fee.

As this thread has shown, prices vary wildly by location and what works best for some, may not for all.

Even if I could get ORD delivered free (150 gal minimum here) the price is always more than red. I would also need a second bulk tank.

For me, it's hard to beat the price and convenience of good old red. Yes, their are chemical differences in some places, but what they deliver around here is #2 ULSD. The dealer swears it's the same as ORD without the red dye. Again, this may not be true everywhere.

I've always been curious if the red dye is put in at the fueling rack at a refinery or if it's put in at the distributor.

Sort of like the odorant in propane. I know way back when, the stink was added at the distributor but now it comes with the propane when it's loaded at the fuel rack.

Interesting story abut that... One of my good friends and hunt buds owns the local propane company up town (I buy my gas from him) and when he was much younger, he caught his girlfriend cheating on him so he took some of the concentrated odorant and dripped it in her other boyfriend's car and turned out he had to sell the car to get rid of the stink... Talk about payback.. There it is.

Think it called Methyl Mercaptan or something like that. All I know is it stinks terrible.

Around here, the red dye is added to home heating oil at the distributor by law. I know this because I buy empty 55 gal drums from them. A while back, I bought one that was labeled "RED DYE #8". In the process of cutting the head off the drum to use as a burn barrel, I got some residue on my hands and clothes. My hands were red for over a month and my Carhart's were permanently stained.

The first time I burned trash in that barrel, the flames were a weird shade of red. Strong stuff!

get just a drop on your fingers and in just a few minutes you'll be tasting it, for a long time.

Diesel on NH coast is $3.39 and regular is $2.55 - this summer both were almost $1 more.

Back when I worked at a large mine I was in charge of the bulk fuels. When diesel was delivered it was my job to put red dye in the tank before the trucker dumped in the load of diesel. 250cc per 10,000 gallons diesel if I remember correctly.

So I'd say that the dye is added to the tank at the point of delivery. What is in the delivering truck is not dyed, and I can understand why. That dye would show up in any subsequent diesel that was put in the truck's tank, even if it were meant for on-road use, and that would be a big problem!

My distributor ads the die as they are unloading the tanker truck to there bulk tanks.
