What to do with used hydraulic fluid

What is everyone doing with your used hydraulic fluid? There are quite a few drop off locations in my area for used motor oil but can’t find anything for hydraulic fluid.

I run it as bar oil on the chainsaw, use as cutting fluid on the lathe and milling machine, even as tapping fluid. I got plenty of uses for it.

Used hydraulic oil makes good chainsaws bar oil unlike motor oil which is nasty. But if you want rid of it it’s fine to pour it in the waste motor oil collection sites.

It aids in burning brush piles too, along with old tires. Indiana allows 2 tires per brush pile to aid in keeping it burning. Used oils help get the tires burning, after they are burning, even a rain doesn't extinguish a brush pile.

I cant believe anyone would allow you to burn tires. They make the most noxious smelling smoke there is.

It is illegal to burn tires out my way.

The used tires are shred into little flakes and re-purposed. The metal being steel belts, is pulled out with a magnetic field and recycled too.

I've never had anyone ask what oil is in the bucket, and my local dump will take 5 gal per day per person. Autozone/ect used to keep at log book, to supposedly limit to 5 gal per month, but no local ones bother anymore. I just try to avoid anything with fuel mixed in at indoor locations. If you asking "why would fuel be mixed in your hydralic", if you clean a steel mesh filter, I just wash it with diesel.

I agree. 20 years ago, father in law had farm timbered. I did NOT much care for the crew that did it but, that wasn't up to me. (left litter everywhere....done with oil can/gallon jug? Just toss it aside)

Their slash pile was quite large. I was out there one day, noticed a tire inside the slash pile. Their tree skidder had a flat, they fixed it, tossed the old tire into the pile of slash (100 feet long, 20/30 feet wide, 15 feet high type pile)

That struck a VERY negative nerve with me, I called the timber guy, he just laughed and said "BURN IT" I said nope, I wanted him to come & get it. He said again, just burn it.

I called county. They said nothing they could do against the timber guy...BUT, if I filed a complaint against my father in law, then by extension, HE could re-direct to them.... So I said I wanted to file the complaint (and explained to FIL what was going on)

Never saw them again in person however, a week or so later, I went to pile to check and the tire was gone.

Who wants the carcass and steel (fiberglass?) substructure of that laying around forever, even after being burned??

Tires were used to burn orchard pruning piles here before 1968. Yes stinky.

As a starving student I made a little money gathering the now-useless scrap tires from growers that year, and selling them to the Goodyear tire recapper. I was surprised he took every one regardless of condition.

I have been told, if you have a pile of tires and burn them at night, nobody will know. You can throw the metal in the metal dumpster.

Until the next day when black soot is covering everything. I won't burn tires but sometimes it gets to the point where you need to do something. Wife and I bought a property that was essentially abandoned. Rims with tires everywhere. Had many fires that I did not like burning. Still more cleaning left to do. Need a scrap dumpster another 30 yard plus plus dumpster. The previous dumpsters were 20? I believe.

Depending on your location, and if the oil is not contaminated with water lots of guys like me with waste oil furnaces will pick it up if within a reasonable driving distance, and if there is 8-10 gallons.

For that, sometimes a big hole is the best option, just place it somewhere you won't eventually want to build. I know people think it's bad, but, tires aren't going to hurt anything buried, and neither will scrap metal.

Our dump takes tires off of the rim for free. Limits 2 per day. Charge if on rim of $10 or $15. I would never bury or burn one.

Our county makes getting rid of tires very difficult and expensive. Limits, charges, wait in line with the trash trucks, etc...
You practically have to make an appointment to get rid of them.
All other recyclables , including waste oil, are very convenient to drop off at the facility.
