bent bucket repair

Don’t overthink it. Remove the bucket, stand it on end with the bend end down and go at it with a BFH. It’s a loader bucket, not a Swiss watch.

Check the loader arms. I'd imagine they suffered too.
Possibly but Not necessarily.
Tractor Manufacturers put rather skimpy buckets on these types of tractors as a point of least resistance to protect the rest of the lift system.
What distorts fels the most is uneven load or lift distribution like when ppl try to use the corner of the bucket to dig out while lifting a rock or such.
I could b wrong of course but This damage looks more like a “push” situation with the bucket doing what it was supposed to do. I also wonder if something didn’t strike the bucket from the side creating the dent.

At any rate, this bucket distortion is what l would consider a minor deviation. I have seen a lot worse bucket damage from customers who used a cut or scut in ways it’s not designed for.

I could be even more wrong, but to me, it looks like the bucket hit the side hard as they were backing up and turning.

I have seen a bucket sort of like this when a customer backed into his bucket hard with his zero turn he was trying to maneuver in his shed.
But as l think about it, a rock would have to be in position just right to create this damage.
To your point, it does look more like a side strike.
Could very well have happened before the op borrowed it and even the owner may not have been aware of it if a family member hit it with something unbeknownst.
Who knows.
It’s an easy fix though or we could turn it into some type of “who dunnit” murder mystery just for fun.

Just buy that dude a new bucket.
Why?
It’s not a given the borrower did it.
Fix it yes but spend $600 or $700 for a new one assumes a premise that may not be true.

I’m in the camp that no one is borrowing my stuff. I’ll go to the would be borrower’s site and do it myself first to avoid any controversy that may ensue with “borrowing”.

Maybe somebody already mentioned this. But this is how I would do this repair. My brother in law folded his bucket up on his JD 7210 and I think I used 3 tabs to keep everything aligned. It turned out acceptable when done.

It’s the right thing to do. A person that doesn’t look a tractor over and notice THAT before using it is the type of person to bend the crap out of a bucket and say it must have been like that when I got it.

Next time rent the machinery you need with insurance.

That’s a stretch and you know it.
He didn’t say it was like that. He asked if it was because he couldn’t think cleaning out mud could cause this.
What if he didn’t do it?
He’s at least fixing it.
You weren’t there. I wasn’t there so there is really nothing to start accusing ppl with beyond supposition?

I know not to loan you anything.

If I wasn’t sure if I caused the damage I would ask the owner if I did or not. Then go from there. Not come on a forum to ask about doing a crappy repair on it.

He did just that.
It could have been done at the owners place without the owner knowing if another family member was involved in doing it.
As for coming on a forum, isn’t it so wrong to find out how to do something one is not quite familiar with as to how to accomplish.
I mean the nerve of the guy.
Who says beyond you, that the repair would be crappy?
Actually, the biggest mistake is to make the bucket stronger.
I am willing to bet a person with a little skill could make that bucket look like nothing ever happened to it.
It’s a minor injury for heavens sake.

I’d buy the man a new bucket.
and l would go in a different direction because of having repaired buckets way, way worse than this.
This fix is puppy doo-doo.
And if you did it to someone else’s, I’d help you fix it so you wouldn’t have to spend for a new bucket.
It’s not like replacing a hip.

I agree if it were mine, however he mentioned later that it wasn't his tractor. If you borrow it you better return it in better shape than you received it. Has always worked for me!
This is why I don't borrow!!! If I am going to pay for something it's going to land in my stable, not somebody else's.

My way to fix it would be to put the bucket against an
old oak tree or similar but put a 1x4x4 and attack it with
a sledge hammer start in the front and work your way back
you want the 1 by to be level with the bend and you should
be able to get it straight with some muscle

That's what I would do. Worse case is if it doesn't work out go the welding route or replace bucket.

If you have the welding equipment it would probably be best to take a grinder with cutoff wheel and cut half way through or so at the creases to make it easier to masage back to shape then reweld at those points which would get rid of the stretching effect and should be roughly as strong as new...
