The only time we're dry is July and August. The state contracts out with a company to clear brush and scrub back along the sides of the interstates as well as any and all exits.

The company is pretty much exclusively using forestry munchers on a couple track hoe's.

So I've witnessed them quite often.

I like the track hoe mounted masticator heads better than the skid steer mounted. They can reach out over slopes that skid steers can’t access. And it’s interesting to watch them chunk a small tree down from the top down. Experienced operators can create chunks instead of uniform chips which can be a problem with suppressing ground vegetation.

My Ram is 5YO and has zero rust. I will admit, my Fords didn’t rust, either.
The reason is because I took care of them and washed out the undersides.

I’m going to own one of those some day. I can’t do the heavy brush and small tree removal work by hand down on the ground forever.

One would be fun, but I have to assume that maintenance on one would be terrible because they sure put up a huge cloud of dust as they work, and of course you would want an air-conditioned cab so you’d be cleaning out the air conditioning every five minutes it would seem to me!
And I’ve only seen them operate in Indiana. I’d hate to see them in a really dry climate.

I operate one about 3-5 times a year. Never much of a “dust” issue. More like a dirt/grit issue. Once you’re in the cab its ok.
The Mini-Ex with a mulcher head is better. set up, IMO.
I get too claustrophobic in the skid loader. Easy to get trapped in compared to a skiddy.

After Ford discontinued the 7.3, I moved to Dodge/Cummins. So did all 5 of my rancher BILs.

People ask me “is the cummins really that good?”
It’s hard to explain to the non-owner the way they pull with a trailer. They just pull more “linear”. And you don’t feel nervous about running them hard all day. The rest of the truck, which people have made a cottage industry out of mocking, has been very good. Very little to complain about.
If I were running a diesel truck just to get attention, I’d do a Ford or a GM. They are faster and more fun to drive. A 6.7 Cummins is built for work. It’s found in trucks up to a tri-axle in size and AG farm tractors and many other commerical applications. Powerstroke & Duramax are non-existent there.

I don't have to worry about slope at my place. I just need to drive through the woods devouring everything in my path (cue evil laugh)
