I guess you never bought parts from John Deere.
You'll almost need a loan for the simplest parts, like a 10" x 1,5" shaft with a splined end for a baler gear box, price tag $1000+

Not tractor related but, at least 10 years ago I had a GE stove that I needed a new controller for. Went online and the way the parts diagram was labelled I couldn't tell if it was the controller or something else. So, I looked at the price for each. 1 was around $118 and the other was around $90. So, I chose the more expensive one. Turned out it was the face plate/sticker for the controller. After scanning the front of it without taking it out of the bag I sent it back and ordered the other after confirming with GE customer service.

Apparently, the controller label sticker costs more than the brains of the stove. Who knew. Even the cost of the label was outrageous. I printed out my scan and used double sided tape to put it on the controller after having it laminated.

Here's a bad one. The FEL on my Mahindra 2555 cab controller/joystick broke the small plastic/bakelite piece that holds the cables for the valve controls. Mahindra only sells the entire joystick assembly (~$1,000 Not Installed!) and I haven't found a 3rd party unit. The other pieces are just formed mild steel rod and a few nuts. Go figure! Maybe we are all in the wrong business!View attachment 2664599

You could try finding some youngster who knows how to do that 3D printing stuff, could probably make you one for a lot less!

Almost anything Kubota. Try $113 for a replacement spring for a tractor seat.Or $22 for the plastic windows crank handle to a 1100C.
Both items are still sitting in Kubota's warehouse.

Or $1100 for a ~$100 PTO shaft! Really a rip-off IMHO.

I could see $200 or $300, but 1/3 the cost of a complete midmount finish mower is ridiculous.

I knew a guy who worked for GE waaaay back. He told me a story about the "real reason" for $800 toilet seats. No idea if it is correct, but sounded reasonable. He said the contracts often have overruns and such and those cost get spread out over everything for some reason. So if they charge an extra 1 mil for some change or something then they would divide that out across every thing in the contract so every bolt and nut and whatnot would look extra expensive as they all got a slice of that over run cost but it wasn't that the part was actually that expensive. Seemed logical.

That would be illegal!
