My YM2310 wouldn't turn over. The solenoid would pull in, I could hear it, but the starter motor wouldn't spin. Suspecting the contacts in the solenoid were bad, and the solenoid being the type that doesn't come apart, I bought a new solenoid. Problem solved. Now, less than a year later, I'm having the same problem. The solenoid pulls in but the starter won't spin. If I try turning the key several times the starter will eventually spin and the engine starts right up. The starter spins the engine plenty fast so I don't think it's the battery or and connections. So, instead of buying another solenoid at about 70 bucks, should I just buy a gear reduction starter? If so, is there a particular brand I should buy? Any recommendations?
Thanks,
Eric

Does your starter match any of these Yanmar part numbers?

What you described sounds like burnt contact inside solenoid. Before replacing anything I'd try opening the solenoid to clean contacts.

2210 parts manual part number is 124250-77010. I am suspicious that is a misprint but have no way to confirm.

Unfortunately The solenoids that I have are not meant to be taken apart. The cases have the ends rolled over so the only way to take one apart is to grind off or pry open the rolled over case. GRRR.

Sorry to hear that you are having issues. I'm not trying to shade your solenoid, but I had a couple of cheap solenoids go pretty quickly before I switched to an aftermarket high amperage Ford solenoid.

When I have starter issues, I tend to start at the battery and confirm that it is 100%, and that the battery cables are all solid, no corroded terminals, or worn wires. Then I try jumping the solenoid.

If all that checks out, I would buy the gear reduction starter.

Good luck,

Peter

The solenoid is the type that mounts to the starter and does double duty. It throws the gear into the flywheel and also energizes the starter motor. And no need to apologize, you weren't shading my solenoid. I think it is junk and was so when new.

I dunno. I guess I could check Fredricks and see what their part number is and then compare to what you posted above.
Thanks,
Eric
Maybe find your old thread when the starter had issues. I bet I had posted a link to the OSGR newer type. (y)

For me, I would file this one under "life is short". If the cables are all good, I would buy the improved starter. The gear reduction starters do a much better job at starting diesels up.

I don't know if it applies to your engine, but sometimes there is more than one model starter that fits, and one will be a higher power starter. I have never regretted buying the higher power starter, especially on cold mornings.

All the best,

Peter

Are the gear reduction starters less trouble than the OEM style ones with the solenoid that etpm has said he's had trouble with?
In most cases YES.

They still have a solenoid with far less windings, yet it is way smaller, less prone to failure and only work as a plunger type with little travel.

OSGR starters are the norm for today's vehicles, unless you have those stop and go starters to cut off the engine. That's an entirely different topic.

I have 2 older Ford tractors that have the same problem with the starters. The new model solenoids cannot be taken apart to polish the contacts, so the only fix is to replace the solenoid. I have learned that if I keep the cables clean the starter works better.

I use a OEM I was in the motor in 2008 and then a Auto Elec. shop rebuilt it in 2011. $72.78 Not the same starter a YM2210 and the YM2000 uses. Never had the first complaint with mine. Gear Reduction is after market. I still use it to the day.

See the attached,
I went back and looked at my post from about 6 months ago that I had forgot about. Looked at the part numbers to see if they matched my tractor part number and none do. I did find some gear reduction starters online but they are all close to 200 bucks. Careyo63 posted an eBay link that he says will work but I'm not sure. The link doesn't say it will work with the 3T84H engine.

I found one on eBay, a gear reduction one, I hope it lasts.

which one did you get?

The solenoid on my 226d has been one of the few trouble spots, but a trouble spot.
