Should I just buy a new starter?

Are the gear reduction starters less trouble than the OEM style ones with the solenoid that etpm has said he's had trouble with?
In most cases YES.

They still have a solenoid with far less windings, yet it is way smaller, less prone to failure and only work as a plunger type with little travel.

OSGR starters are the norm for today's vehicles, unless you have those stop and go starters to cut off the engine. That's an entirely different topic.

I have 2 older Ford tractors that have the same problem with the starters. The new model solenoids cannot be taken apart to polish the contacts, so the only fix is to replace the solenoid. I have learned that if I keep the cables clean the starter works better.

I use a OEM I was in the motor in 2008 and then a Auto Elec. shop rebuilt it in 2011. $72.78 Not the same starter a YM2210 and the YM2000 uses. Never had the first complaint with mine. Gear Reduction is after market. I still use it to the day.

See the attached,
I went back and looked at my post from about 6 months ago that I had forgot about. Looked at the part numbers to see if they matched my tractor part number and none do. I did find some gear reduction starters online but they are all close to 200 bucks. Careyo63 posted an eBay link that he says will work but I'm not sure. The link doesn't say it will work with the 3T84H engine.

I found one on eBay, a gear reduction one, I hope it lasts.

Eric
which one did you get?

The solenoid on my 226d has been one of the few trouble spots, but a trouble spot.
