Work Related Injury/Workers Comp?

Here in BC, workers comp (WCB) has been simple in my experience. I got hurt, the company paid the wage for the day. Dr billed WCB directly and got paid. WCB paid 75% of wages tax free (no pension benefits paid) starting the next day either directly to me or to my employer and I got a regular pay cheque.
People do get denied claims and there are review processes set up. There is also a fraud dept that reviews claims and they do have cameras to get those pictures.

I’ve seen enough badly injured comp patience over the years… driving company vehicle and hit by a drunk or beat up or shot during robbery to something heavy dropped on feet…

One of the worst that still gives me chills is the roofer rushed in injured on the job.

He was kneeling down attaching flashing and the guy hot mopping tar swung around hitting him in the face with the mop drenched in hot tar… only saving grace is he turned fast enough to miss the eyes… severe burn to cheek and scalp and his ball cap was tarred to his head… plus shoulder and neck burns…

If any youths are reading this. Getting hurt or playing sports injured to be tough is so stupid. I have some things bothering me now from that, “we need you in the game” mentality.

Thinking back on it those games that I thought were so important, they didn’t matter for anything.(even winning a district championship and playing in college)

Play sports for fun, meeting people, learning discipline and self improvement. Don’t think you need to hurt yourself to get a W in a game that will be quickly forgotten.

Back in 1990 I was working on a landscaping job tamping sod along a curb all day. After constantly bouncing the tower against the edge of the asphalt curbing all day I ended up with what I assumed was tendonitis. Rather than getting it looked at I showed up for work the next day, told the owner what I had done and was put on light duty; basically, anything I could do one handed. All morning I took snide comments from the rest of the crew so after lunch picked up a shovel and started to work. I drove it into the dirt pile once, dropped it and realized how stupid I was. 35 years of swinging an axe hasn't helped it any so I have learned to use it one handed. That also is one reason I now have a wood splitter.

My brother was the superstar high school football until his knee injury and then no more.

Maybe coaches today are different?

I’m the least athletic competitive when it comes to contact sports.

Dad briefly played college football and that didn’t last long… he didn’t like taking the hits so he switched to boxing saying when your opponent tries to hit you in boxing you can hit back.

Dad was good… became the United States Heavyweight Champion but hung up his gloves when another fighter died…

Dad played a little college football but having to take hits didn’t sit well with him so he switched sports to boxing and became the United States Heavyweight Champion…

Dad said what he liked about boxing is when the other guy is trying to hit you… you hit back.

Dad gave it up when gold medal Olympic boxer Ed Sanders died from ring injuries…

I like Dr Comfort walking shoes with inserts and podiatrist friend sells them to me at cost plus 10%

I’m thinking as good as they are for walking they are too soft for the vertical wall mounted ladder to the roof hatch…

The ladder’s thin round rungs concentrate load and more so when lugging things to the roof… refrigerant, condenser fan motors, oxy-propane tanks, etc.View attachment 2834813

I've got well over 40 of those at my current job. They are not comfortable. But the only thing I have to haul up them besides my butt is hand tools, grease guns, lightbulbs and belts. All that fits in a bucket with a rope. Anything large and heavy gets contracted out.

I look at that ladder and I know it would kill my feet. I am susceptible to gout. Even though I take gout meds (interesting enough, the side effects of gout med is... GOUT) i have flares a few times a month. Most outbreaks are kinda light, others make me recliner or bed ridden.
