When my wrists were crushed the nerves going through them were damaged. After several surgeries I was asking my doctor if maybe the circulation to my left forefinger was not up to snuff because it was always cold. He said it was nerve damage that kept the finger cold.

Back in the 70s I was shearing christmas trees and lightly tapped my left pointer finger with the blade. It was cut to the bone but it was a clean cut. I bet it took 40 years to finally stop getting so cold. Now I have to watch the one that the wood splitter squished.

I work in public right of ways and cross many yards each day. This results in many conversations. When the injured finger comes up I have been surprised how many other men are missing fingers/finger tips various other hand injuries.

I knew better, I really did!
I did a major no-no & I’m lucky it wasn’t worse.
Was boring 1-1/8 holes in a 2x4 to make a table for mounting my pipe clamps for a glue up station & my hand was pulled into the bit.
The photos tell the story no explanation needed.
No nerve or tendon damage!
Embarrassed & ashamed it happened but felt the need to post this.
I was excited to finally start a project for my daughter in law & just got careless.

On the ambulance we used to say "Do you know why farmers wear bright yellow gloves? It makes it easier for the Paramedics to find the missing fingers."

Had a similar incidence with a Gravely snowblower (manual start) when I was about 14. Chute got jammed, belts squealing. Procedure was to grab a stick, give the blockage a jab. That usually cleaned it quickly and I didn't have to shut it down clear the chute then pull start it.
Stick got tangled in my glove, pulled my hand in, chopped the middle finger on my right hand.
Consider my self lucky. Just broke the bone. Made it to a close young doctor.
Finger swollen up to the max. He drilled a small hole in the fingernail. I stayed up all night picking my clotting blood out of the hole to keep the blood flowing.
Next day Dad drive me to the old Doctor Town in Underhill Vt. He took a look, said "This is going to hurt".
Took some snippers, snipped the nail a bit, then took forceps and ripped the nail off.
Lesson to turn off machinery before inserting body parts.

When I was a kid, I seemed to always notice guys with a nubby finger, missing finger, etc... I specifically recall the first one. Our neighbor was an engineer at Bendix. He was always building stuff in his garage. My dad and he were good friends, so we'd mosey down there to see what he was working on. As they were talking, I noticed one of his index fingers was missing the first joint. Being a small kid, of course I blurted out "What happened to your finger?" as soon as I saw it, right in the middle of their conversation. :ROFLMAO: He took me over to his radial arm saw, put his hand on the table and pulled the saw towards his hand and said something about "And that was that." He and my dad had a good laugh. I was shocked. 😂 Since then, I've met dozens of nubbies in my life. I almost became one a few years back, but Dr. was able to save it.

Worked for a stamping company in mid 80's. Was amazed the number of older employees with a finger missing. Unfortunately while I worked there 2 people lost digits. 1 guy lost index finger and another lost his left thumb, index finger and middle finger. They flew the last guy to Louisville on helo to try and re-attach them but didn't work. Thankful when I left there 9 years later still had all digits I started with.

When I worked at the newspaper, a guy was inching the press to put plates on and ran his entire hand through the rollers up to his wrist. They didn't want to reverse it thinking it would cause more damage, so he had to stand there for quite a long time while they dismantled the press to get the top roller off of his hand.

In all seriousness, his hand looked like a hand in a cartoon where an anvil drops on it. It was huge and flat! Somehow, they managed to save all of his fingers and he returned to work eventually. He passed away a few years later. RIP Larry. :) I'm smiling because he was a good person.

Those darn middle fingers are just too long, so I shortened my left one at work one day. A dozen years later my kid did the exact same thing.

My Dr. suggested I go to physical therapy. I thought he was joking so I said no, and had a tender spot for years.
My kid went to physical therapy and ~ 3 months later was pain free.

Physical therapy has always been a great thing for me until this back injury diagnosis. Has always resolved any problems. Foot, back, legs, finger, rotator cuff, etc... but I had pain in both hips and legs, exactly the same. I knew it was back. Insurance made me get an X-ray first, which didn't show the problem, then go to all kinds of physical therapy before they'd authorize an MRI. Therapy didn't do anything. I knew it was my spine. MRI confirmed. Surgery was 10 months and two deductibles from the 1st doctor visit. Grrr.... ;)

My grandfather could only count to 7 1/2 when he retired from being a carpenter.
My father-in-law could get to 8 1/2 after years of farming.

During a remodeling project in a cardboard box factory, we noticed the man who swept the floors had some mental issues. He was friendly and OK with a broom. He loved to watch the machines run. One day while staff was on their afternoon break, he decided to try to use the box shredder. He held onto the scrap cardboard as it went into the machine, it took both arms off to the elbows. As the Paramedics were taking him past our work site a bell rang, he said "Good, the bell means I get a 15-minute break." Saw him some time later with 2 hooks.

Grrr.... is right. Sometimes the "simple things first" for a fix is not the best advise.

A podiatrist told me he was 90% sure I had Capsulitis of the second toe. He was wrong.

Interesting thing was when they finally authorized my MRI in November, I had a choice to go over the results with the LPN that week, or wait until January to see the surgeon. I chose LPN. She looked over the MRI with me and scheduled me an appointment with the Surgeon the next week. 😂
