Three point on those things to mount a winch ?
Had a guy do some skidding with a couple of horses years ago in a tough area. I'm not a horse guy but I was smitten with those two ! He had a log arch he had built out of an old axle and truck wheels. He would talk to the team and they would back that thing right where he wanted it.
Amazing what two horse power could haul out! When he "parked" them to get ready for another pull they would find a sugar maple sprout and give it a chew ! They were some mighty big horses, guess in the drafting world if you're going to have one , have a big one !

Yes, but it makes great "big kindling" for me. If someone tried to use it to heat, it is "gofer" wood. Put it in the stove and "go for" more.

It would be a good wood for spring, when you want to take the chill off but not have the fire go all day or all night. As I mentioned before though, I can't stand the smell. I burn hemlock for that reason instead.

I had cataract surgery last November and December so my normal firewood season was cut short. I want to pull out some more firewood before mud season to make up for it. It is still winter here - plenty cold.

But too much snow for me at almost 2 feet still on the ground.

The tractor has been restricted to plowing duty for about two months. It's supposed to warm up and rain come the middle of the week. Hopefully it will take out some snow and get cold again afterwards so the tractor and I can get back in the woods.

I dragged home a poplar tree once. Once.

I burned the entire 1.5 cords of it in about 8 days, and we were still cold! Most useless firewood ever created, each split must have less BTU value than a roll of newspaper.

Don't waste your valuable time or wood shed space on that stuff!

I actually use poplar in my maple syrup evaporator. Works well for that and dries quickly at the smaller size splits I use for faster fires.

I wish I had your problem.
Just had 5” last week , frozen ground, twelve degree temps and had relinquished my skidding career.
I used to love when it was so cold, the tractor tires wouldn’t even get wet while going through snow.
Now I live vicariously through you guys who still work the woods.

I split some more wood today. I have a ballast box on the back of my tractor that has a receiver in it but I can’t see to get close to my splitter. I use a hitch setup on my forks to move it. I don’t even latch the ball, I only move it about a 100 feet from where I store it to where I split.

I found a couple of yellow balls on extending rods with magnets on the other end. One on the hitch, and one on the ball, and I can get really close without being able to see either the hitch or the ball.

Thanks for that post jigs_n_fixtures !! I have a 2" Reese hitch on my winch so I can pull my trailer and a 1-1/2" Reese on the back of the trailer so I can bring my splitter along. I can't see either one so getting hooked up requires several or more trips on and off the tractor to make little adjustments. Your ball idea sounds like it would be a big help. I'm gona try it.

I can feel your pain but it will come to all of us some day one way or another. I try not to think about it.

Looks like it's hand a vertical capability in its past; my guess is he doesn't have that big of rounds and prefers to be able to split and toss straight into the trailer?

I have not seen a Huskee log splitter in that configuration. Do you not need a vertical position?

It is a standard Huskee splitter - goes vertical for big rounds. When I used it with my trailer I wanted to work closer to the trailer so that it was a short lob to throw the splits in. I modified it so that I could easily turn the beam either way on the trailer frame.

Undo the two hydraulic hoses on the valve. Take out the hinge pin. Pick the beam off the frame. Turn the now light frame around. Drop the beam. Insert the pin and reconnect two hydraulic lines.

I ended up getting a set of magnetic trailer alignment balls from Harbor Freight. Connecting trailers with most of our modern vehicles is a breeze with their backup cameras, but it's a pain in the butt with my antique truck. I can't even see most of my trailers out the back window, and the tongue of my dump trailer and my log forwarding trailer are each heavy enough that getting "close enough" and moving the rest by hand risks blowing out my back.
