Welcome to TBN IansG ! Interesting tongs unit you have there.

I've had the same skidding tongs as IansG for six years now. For levelish ground, they work really well and you rarely have to leave the tractor seat to hook up or drop off. With the chain and shackle, you're pulling from the draw bar, so chance of flipping over backwards is greatly reduced. Much easier to connect to the 3 point than the TajFun winch I have.
I see they have a website again and have moved from the rainy side to the sunny side of the Cascades.

Mr. Gordon, with your trailer loaded with splits, does it get worrisome on a side hill? It looks like a high CoG combined with the narrow axels.

This week I had (6) of the larger 330gal IBC totes filled with fresh split "green" maple and cherry that I moved with my forks. Maybe 1/3 of a cord each and it was heavy, slooow going and I kept it low out of tipping concerns.

Visually, in your "train" photo, your trailer looks like it's easily carrying more than twice that with the sides boards you added and it's stacked pretty high!

Back when all I had were two wheel drive tractors without front loaders, I used a pair of log tongues on a three point lift boom, for skidding logs. I rarely had to get off the seat to hook them up or take them off. I could only drag one log at a time that way though.

Since I’ve had a 4wd tractor with front loader, I move the logs mostly with a couple ofheavy 4” angle iron “forks” bolted under my heavy duty bucket. I still have the tongues, but haven’t used them in about 20 years, since I’ve had the loader tractor.

It is a standard Huskee splitter - goes vertical for big rounds. When I used it with my trailer I wanted to work closer to the trailer so that it was a short lob to throw the splits in. I modified it so that I could easily turn the beam either way on the trailer frame.

Creative. Good job on the modifications!

Thanks goeduck !

You are right - the trailer is narrow. The tractor too, actually. And I freight the trailer up pretty good. Not a rig to run on side hill terrain which we have plenty of. I keep my tractor on the tractor roads when in the woods. This is more of a side hill than it looks with a level tractor road running across it. A couple pics from when I started this system before I turned the splitter around.

There were a lot of old skid trails here when we first came. But I could run the tractor on very few of then. I enjoy converting them to tractor roads.

Looks like the trailer just has a walking beam suspension, so it shouldn't really sag sideways from gravity is my guess. The tractor of course has a tripod setup with the unsprung swivel axle in front so it may be less stable on a side-slope than the trailer?
