Splined shafts through the gearbox are held in place with a Circlips. A round clip that fits in a Grove in the shaft next to a bearing holding it in its horizontal position. During normal operation there aren't any pressures pushing or pulling.
The bearings and Circlips are all that hold the position of the main shaft.
Using a slide hammer or hitting the end of the shaft can do serious damage.
Conferatemule admitted his mistakes in this threads title. He solved his problem weeks ago.
No slide hammer.
