Splined shafts through the gearbox are held in place with a Circlips. A round clip that fits in a Grove in the shaft next to a bearing holding it in its horizontal position. During normal operation there aren't any pressures pushing or pulling.

The bearings and Circlips are all that hold the position of the main shaft.
Using a slide hammer or hitting the end of the shaft can do serious damage.

Conferatemule admitted his mistakes in this threads title. He solved his problem weeks ago.
No slide hammer.

Forums could use some kind of marker that the O.P. can mark the thread as (Problem solved)

It doesn't help that this was the leading thread earlier this week on the "Trending Topics" email which goes out every Monday. Before that email, the thread had been inactive for almost two weeks.

If I were the OP I’d rent one of those big tow behind air compressors and a jackhammer they use to break up concrete to get it off. Either that or do what he did a week ago.

Your first suggestion would be more fun!
