Yep, I got it! You started 41 years ago, that was the old indirect injection system, which is much more forgiving than the newer direct injection HPCR system.

I can safely state, TomCat mouse and rat bait also works to repel elephants, because I've never seen signs one in my barn. It's difficult to prove a negative.
An aside;
Industry is working on adding ethanol to diesel fuel, but the multitude of problems appear to be insurmountable.
