A local Ford dealer had a radio advertisement recently that said they have over 100 Ford Mavericks on their sales lot. I’ve never looked at them because my old diesel truck is only used when I need a truck and not a daily driver, so it gets limited mileage per year.

They've almost got it. Now, they just need to cut 1000 lbs off the weight and put in a gas engine with manual transmission and they would have something.

Basically, you would have a modern-day International Scout. Would probably sell millions of them.

Happens every time gas prices pass $4/gal. People rush to unload their "gas guzzlers" for cheap money to buy some cramped, underpowered little econobox to "save money" on gas.
Of course, once prices come back down they'll unload them and get something they really want.

This is exactly what I'm hoping for out of electric vehicles. A low cost vehicle that is just for running to town to get what I need, and bring it back home. No frills, nothing extra, and never having to stop at a gas station. It just has to be reliable.

Toyota has been talking about doing this with a gasoline engine, but the price seems to double for the US compared to what they can sell it for in other countries. If I feel that it's a quality vehicle, I'll buy one.

For me, it would be like buying my Kawasaki Mule. It won't replace my big truck, or anything else, it just gives me a cost-effective option to do things that would be easier in a smaller vehicle.

So true. And, for those of us who like to drive "cramped, underpowered little econoboxes", we have to try to figure out when the "cycle" is going to end, so we know when to buy our next new one.

I missed out on the last real Honda Civic (after they started making them gargantuan), so had to wait until 2007 to buy a subcompact two-door hatchback (Toyota Yaris). Now that I'm thinking of replacing that car, they have discontinued the Honda Fit and Toyota Yaris, so there are basically no more "cramped, underpowered little econoboxes" right now (especially ones with manual transmissions). Hopefully the cycle will continue and someone will start making an actual small, fun hatchback again, but I'm not holding my breath.

When the current one goes to the crusher, I'll probably be stuck with small SUV with an automatic transmission, just like everybody else....

Conversely for somebody who needs a big truck; the time to buy is when gas is going for stupidly high prices.
