What dilemma is that? I still don't have one, but have never seen any good reason I should.
I believe you'll need a real ID to enter any federal building. Depending on how you define "federal building", it could include a post office, VA hospital, etc.
Individual states may impose similar restrictions.

I've never had a passport, never had any need for one, though now I believe one is required in order to return from Canada.

It is completely unneeded and unnecessary governmental interference. Just a step in the direction of Hitlers Germany, your papers or your life.
I agree that it does seem to be overstepping, but that bus left the station a long time ago. How many here have cellphones that they have on them everywhere they go? "They" already know where you are, where you've been, and who you've been with. :devilish: There is no privacy anymore.

Sadly, making the rounds to the Fargo IRS office means talking to Federal security guys. They check the DL (I have Minnesota's verified type, which I believe satisfies the real ID thingy). I believe one of the guards scans the ID for a database while another security officer watches the metal detection stuff and a third officer manages you and your stuff. There is never a line and I'm always friendly, and so are the guards.

My wife and I sometimes enter a military installation. My son is in the air force and have have been on 3 air force bases to see him through the years. Most recently in 2024 as a sponsored visitor. At one time he and family lived on base, so visited maybe every 4-6 months. With RealId going in effect that would stop without correct Id.

The last time I drove on base I needed my registration, proof of insurance, drivers license and my passport card…

Yes. Registration and proof of insurance is required but starting in May a regular drivers license will not get you into miliary installations without a gold star on license, although if you have a passport that may work instead of a gold star license

What is a passport card?

I have a pass port, but "a card"?

I’ve had one since 2008 in addition to the passport book.

It’s driver license sized and fits in wallet and not good for international flights.

When I went to get my real ID drivers license with the star they would not accept my original notarized birth certificate, said it had to come from the state Bureau of Vital Statistics.

Over 80 years ago only the mother's name, baby's name and date of birth was on the birth certificate. When I finally got my birth certificate from the state it had the exact same information.

Like ultra said, looks a lot like a driver's license, and basically duplicates the basic info in your passport. It's a good thing to carry when traveling, in case your passport gets lost or stolen, you have a backup ID. Also serves as second form of ID when needed.

I ran into the same thing. I had what was a notarized photocopy of the original that I'd gotten in the early 70s. Nope, no go. Had to get a new one. Most of the same information (not everything from the old was on the new), but printed on a different form with "security" features.
What was most annoying was I went to my hometown (3 hr away) to get this only to find out I could have gotten a copy from any town clerk in the state...it was all in a database.

Sometimes it’s best to opt out…

Texas didn't wait till the last minute to implement the Real ID. I didn't have any issues when I renewed my Texas DL. Made an appointment online, walked in at the appropriate time with my old DL and passport card, and left shortly after with my DL renewed to a Real ID card. Plenty of document choices to confirm identity and proof of U.S. citizenship.

I’ll change the subject matter!
I was felling a dead Doug fir🌲 well over 100’ and 30+” at the stump and didn’t move my saw far enough away
I got extremely fortunate in that it only bent the bar, and cracked the the kick back lever. Replaced the bar and epoxied the lever, all better now! Borrowed my wonderful neighbor’s saw and used a floor jack to remove! Only cost $60.00 for the bar, thought I might have to buy a new saw🤬! Hope you people learned something from this experience!!!😂😂😂

Many years ago my ex's father was doing some clearing with a JD350 loader and put his chain saw on the track while attending to some thing else. Of course he forgot about the saw and ran over it when operating the loader. He went to get the saw a little later and realized what he had done. He caught a glimpse of the saw and dug it out of the mud with a shovel. He wiped off the mud to find it completely undamaged. He was then careful not to make that mistake again.

Over my lifetime I have lost many fuel caps and tools setting them on the tractor tire and forgetting about it....

I'd not be admitting to the "many" scootr! :p We've all done it once, maybe even twice... but you're supposed to learn to stop putting things on tires after that.

Let me just say more than twice, 3 come to mind... twice the gas cap for my Terex 640. The saddle tank was next to the front tire. Worst part was it was keyed and very unique... $50 dealer only item each time.
The third time was 20" pr of channel locks. Always seems to happen when I am discing so lost items are immediately buried 🤬

You sound like my buddy who is retired, but still farming, years ago he was with his tractor out in the disced field and he borrowed two of my wrenches. Within minutes he had lost my two wrenches and his pipe wrench. He found my wrenches, but not his pipe wrench.
