Ford 4610SU Needs Starter

So the starter is growling and continues to run after the engine starts. I don't have time to rebuild the current starter so want to just get a replacement for now.

It seems there was two different size starters, a 4-1/2" and a 5"

It seems the 4-1/2" has been discontinued and the replacement for that one is a different 5" version.

The two parts numbers are: D4NN11000BR for an original 5" replacement or 83981923 for a 5" that replaces an original 4-1/2" starter.

It seems like this unit replaces both?

I want to keep the original to rebuild someday, but want to make sure this replacement will work. Has anyone replced a starter on a 4610 lately and can confirm?

Does the starter really continue to run after the engine starts or does the Bendix fail to disengage? These are two separate issues. Replacing the starter may fix one of them but not the other. Take the time to identify the problem before throwing money in possibly the wrong direction.

The starter pinion disengages from the flywheel but the starter motor still spins.

Either way I want to keep the starter that is on the tractor as I believe it is the original, so will rebuild it someday. I just don't have the time to do that right now.

I checked all the wiring, don't see any issues.

This happened all of a sudden after using the tractor a lot the last few months.

I believe the question is, does the starter keep spinning after you take the key out of the start position?

The answer to the replacement is yes, the 5" will work. It is even more cumbersome to install and remove, but it works.
Installing it requires you to put the butt end of the starter in first, lower the whole starter down into the starter area. then angle the nose into the bell housing hole.

You might want to consider a gear reduction starter. They are a little smaller that the OEM starter and a little more expensive, but they put out the same power at higher rpms. Check Yesterdaystractor.com for pricing as well as the internet.

Yeah, I had seen those but I bought the 5" that matched the part number in my parts book.

I have not changed it yet, but I am kind of wishing I got the gear reduction starter.

I changed the starter on my Ford 575D backhoe a couple years ago, it was a pain to get to the rear bolt next to the block. But at least that one was a 4 CYL engine. The 4610SU is a 3 CYL, the injection pump is very close to the end of the starter, looks like more of a pain to get to that rear bolt. Certainly hope I don't need to remove the injection pump to do this...

4 1/2" and 5" are one in the Same Starter, 5" just having a little more torque. If I recall correctly, 5610 and up were 5", down were 4 1/2" until the Shibaura's

Again, it is a pain to get it in and out, but removing the injection pump is not necessary. Finger pincher/knuckle buster yes.
To get the rear bolt, use a 3" and a 6" 3/8" drive extension to lay in behind the solenoid.
At least you don't have to contend with a frame rail that is on the 575D
