Our area has the worst flea problem ever and I bought Bifen granules to try to control them. I want to do a little over an acre of my property and don.t want to have to walk the whole area a hundred times if it only distributes them in an area about 2 feet wide. Looking them up on the internet, none of them list how wide an area it covers in one pass. I have never needed or used a spreader before and hopefully will never need to use it again so I don't want to spend a lot on an expensive spreader I may never use again.

I would just throw it by hand if I was only doing it once.

But to answer your question more directly, I typically skip about 6 feet between rows with my spreader.

Sorry about the fleas. Isn't funny how one year can be off the charts? We had one year 16-17 years ago that was so bad that if you stood still you could hear the clicking of the fleas jumping and landing.

What is the application rate you want to target? Lbs/1,000sq.ft.?

There are two mains types of push spreaders that I know of; the 24" line spreader, and rotating disk versions. The latter can spread quite a swath, but it comes down to that lbs/acre item.

I've done that sort of acreage with a hand crank, but it gets old fast.

I'd make sure to use a respirator, even though pyrethrins aren't that toxic.

All the best,

Peter

It has special urgent warnings on the label not to even get it on your skin or clothes. I know that some products give a warning like that just to "cya" but since I have never used this before I was not taking any chances.

Drop spreader is fixed width while rotary spreader is a function of travel speed and granule weight and or wind speed. I think most rotary spreaders figure 5 - 6 ft at normal walking speed.

Don't really know how people are going to be answer your question as throw distance is dependent upon walking speed and weight and shape of material being spread. However, using a Chapin spreader with rotating disc to spread the slow release fertilizer granules, the throw is about 3 feet either side of the spreader. At a fast walk I see a 4 foot throw to each side. If I change speed to slow walk then maybe 1 foot throw to each side.

This one says it will do an 8-10' spread...

I have a Scott's unit that does about 6' spread. But I typically set it to half the coverage and make two passes. One north/south and the other east/west. It helps assure complete coverage with fertilizer so you don't get yellow lines where you miss. I'm guessing that won't matter much with flea poison.

I would say you could spread every 10-12' apart with bifenthrin. Even if you don't cover some areas, you should kill all the fleas. I use bifenthrin on many acres of athletic fields every year. But I always spray the liquid form. Do you have a sprayer?

Also, my Scott's unit has a side guard that you can turn on or off with a lever that prevents broadcasting to the right side. This is good for going along flower beds, drives, sidewalks, buildings, etc...

EDIT: It's called Edge Guard.

Pretty handy.

Here's a towable one. That'll save you from walking through the stuff after you spread it.

Now that I have the Bifenthrin and the spreader, I need to find out how long I have to wait before I let my dogs on the grass again. I have spent a long time trying to get an answer with Google but all I get is different answers and warnings. Naturally, the container it comes in has no information on this topic.

The answer should be on the label on the container.
However, it should not be very long, if any time at all. Bifenthrin, in some formulations, is used for fleas and ticks and can also be used for indoor pests.

Read the label on the container carefully. It should give you your answer.

Since asking about spreader I presume you have granuals and in what concentration? I suspect concentration strength and application rate will both figure into wait time.

Label should have all the warnings and application info. Does that label peel open and have several pages under cover page?

Use this in liquid form around pets. Basically, when it is dry I let dog on the lawn. no more than 30-45 minutes. Info that I have is it is not hazardous to pets and humans as it attacks insects in a way that that does not effect us and pets. Sodium channels I believe that mammals do not have but may be wrong

Here are photos of the only instructions that are on the bag. I could get closeups of certain areas if needed but I can find nothing about time to wait for pets to go on grass. Lots of scary info though.

I found this article that gives a pretty good explanation of bifenthrin and pets.

From what I read in the article, it looks like it would be good to water after application or get a rain. Overall, it is fairly safe for pets and humans. Not so good for fish or aquatics.

Also, I did find and read the label and it makes no mention of pets. Generally, if it doesn't warn you on the label, it is not a concern.

Looks like you'll need 5-6 bags.
