My 2007 has auto locking hubs, but a manual transfer case shifter. That is my preference.We used to do that too, but I don’t miss manual locking hubs at all.
Having to pull them apart is grease them with a really lightweight grease and if you forgot to turn in it was almost always below zero and you were trying to turn them to lock them in. I’ve had five 4wd since my late seventies truck with locking hubs and very little issues and definitely less work than manual hubs and especially if you include the spindle bearings on those old 4x4s.
