Hope everyone had a good 4th of July. Our GSD is not really bothered
by fireworks or even times when I am shooting. But she doesn't like
thunder. Not sure if it's the low rumbling aftermath but anyway....
Yesterday evening we sat outside and watched fireworks. We are able
to see several different displays. Some from small towns 10 -15 miles
away, some by local groups having parties and/or individual hill-billy
clans (like our next farm over neighbors) having a cro-mag gathering.
No dog issues. Go inside to watch the news etc. Leave the dog outside.
Decide around 10:30 or 11 to call the dog. (she sleeps inside once it
starts getting hot). Nothing unusual really. Here she comes and runs
right in.......I yell "DROP IT", and she does. Barely missing my wife's
favorite area rug and landing on the plank flooring. I had gotten a
glimpse of something in my dogs mouth and knew it wasn't a dog toy.
It was a terribly mangled creature....the front half, head, neck, front
legs and shoulders were completely gone. No tail and 99% of whatever
hair/fur it originally had had been ripped off. The back feet and hips
could have been the biggest rat I've ever seen, a squirrel or a small
rabbit. The wife was urging me to rapidly get that out of her house
(PDQ !) Delaying this action would have caused me extreme grief and
regret if I didn't move fast enough. So, bagged it and took it out as fast
as I was able. All that was left was a bright red pool of blood about the
diameter of a egg. Wife got that cleaned up.
I've watched this dog chase off coyotes, armadillos, other dogs, water
fowl etc But this is the first "kill" I've seen. I'm pretty sure it was a small
rabbit. Neighbors have free range chickens and so far she's left the
chickens alone. In the past I had a male GSD that could catch squirrels
right off the side of a tree. (he hated squirrels). Give them the death
shake and then dismember them. I never saw him eat one, but who knows.
Anyway. It made for a interesting evening.
Not a story thread, A pic thread, so I'm including a pic.....
