Expectations of a Flail Mower

Well ... In a weeks time, it probably grew ... I find the more often I mow, the quicker grows right after, seems to be some kind of jump start!

I'm sure it has grown a little. But we have been in a long dry spell, so I doubt it is growing much.

Flail mowers rely on a somewhat "venturi" effect to mulch the material. So much over 5'' it will not work well as there is too much distance to keep the material at working space. between 2-4 is optimal it seems in most cases, but there is exceptions. I went through two kinds of flail mowers for my commercial use.

I am on my second season with A Del Marino 6 foot flail with hammer blades. My experience thus far is they are not great at cutting at a high cutting height. I would say 4 to 5 inches tops. I will try the trick of tilting it backwards with the top link to see if I can get a higher cutting height, but one problem I’ve noticed with trying to cut higher stuff will shoot out the front of the mower and coat the back of the tractor with grass. On the other hand, that darn thing will chew through 4 foot high grass like it wasn’t even there. I noticed that the befco article reference said that they can cut 4 inch material. That sounds like a surefire way to tear up your machine anything over an inch and I’m taking out the brush hog.

I'm having the same problem with my funnytop 132. I purchased a chain guard to put on the front to help deflect the debris from coming toward the tractor and operator but I haven't installed it yet as it would require bolting it to the flail frame and I'm concerned that will void the warranty. I contacted Good Works and they have roller extension arms which I'm going to purchase to see if that will raise up the cutting height without needing to adjust the top link.

My ditch bank flail also has an openable rear cover with three adjustments. The further opened the less recutting and the more material spread out behind the mower. Also the less hp required in heavy material.

It came from Victory Tractor Implement, it is a chinese unit Mine is a EMHD-86 Heavy Duty Embankment Flail Mower.
With a CK2620 I would be very cautious with a ditch bank unit you will be putting 550-700 pounds way off to the side of the tractor.
With my 86 inch unit on my Branson 8050 which has 1200 pounds of cast iron added to a 10,000 tractor it can be a pucker inducing operation at times.

Hi Lou, yeah I am really cautious with safety first when using the tractor. I been in the pucker place before. I believe slow and easy is the only way to go. It funny that you put the Victory Implement I been looking at those also the Nova Tractor. They have the same Mower BCRL155 exact same unit which is actually German engineered for a Boswell tractor in Europe, most parts are made in Germany or Italy shipped to China and assembled then shipped out.
