my take on this design is that it's designed for homeowners who only whack occasionally. no way will i shut off trimmer, remove harness & refit trimmer string. plus wonder how much waste of line it would be for unused line. strictly bump for me if properly wound, my workload is too much to use this type design

my take on your take is that you don't whack heavy stuff and can manage to get by on a little string
welcome to try out my workload. whacking heavy stuff does not mean thick line only. has to do with available power & properly wound line. don't have time to stop & reload every time.. how many commercial applications do you see with this type head?
when i want heavy duty weed whacking in thick material, i go with top of line pro trimmer and adequate string delivery system. it's not just about thick line my friend. each to his own, regards

Prior to having a Speed Feed head I probably would have preferred the head with replaceable pieces, Speed Feed is a game changer, especially if you are trimming against rough edges like concrete/stone/asphalt and wearing down the line quickly.

I'm also only ever using bump heads, they're just too convenient for what I'm doing, and I don't need super heavy duty trimmer lines for most of my chores.
But when the Speed Feed max's out at Ø.095" line, and the Stihl 25-2 max's out at Ø.105", what are you going to use with your heavy-duty lines? I think that's the main appeal of the FixCut 31-2, which is spec'd to carry Ø.135" or Ø.155".
I'd also guess there's a lot less line replacement happening, when you're swinging something that fat thru most grasses and weeds.

I use the Echo hand held trimmer with 0.95 line for normal lawn and light weed cutting. But for weeds with heavy stalks and other heavy uses, I get out my Echo wheeled trimmer that uses 1.55 diameter line. That thing is a beast. Someone gave me a Ryobi battery-powered trimmer they didn't need any more; that's got spools of something light. Works great around the lawn. For heavier stuff the old Echo gets used with either the 155 line or a blade. jyoutz: sounds like a useful tool, never tried that type. am sure it has it's place.
in terms of tractors & trimmers....just think of the options we now have compared 40-50 yrs ago when i got started with my property. glad it works for you

When I cut brush, I use the brush cutter head. It is far superior to line for brush.
Brush, for me can be over 6' tall and an inch in diameter. Not small trees (though it handles those well, too), some weeds out here get huge when left alone for a couple of months.

Have a blade that looks similar to a triangle for heavy weeds and can be sharpened with a file, switch to 10" carbide tipped blade when going gets tough. Only use that couple times a year at farm. Around house a small trimmer handles most of trimming
