We are in our infancy toward renewables and I’m willing to bet we will eventually skip over them altogether once fusion alternatives are solved.That's their prerogative. Then they better get working on their preferred energy source.
I worked on a project years ago, where an island had windmills provide their base electrical power. During the evenings, when power demand was down, the excess electrical power then powered electrolysis for hydrogen generation. The hydrogen was then used in the mobile fleet on the island.
The numbers never worked out, but it was an ingenious attempt and still worthy of research.
There is no energy density in wind or solar for the energy purposes of 7 billion ppl.
