Outside storage for attatchments: How to keep the weeds down?

/ Outside storage for attatchments: How to keep the weeds down? #51
Like many, I need to store some of my attachments outside. Problem is, keeping the weeds down around them, especially the ones you don't use very often.

Does anyone have any unique ideas for keeping the weeds at bay?

Landscape fabric is far too weak. Round up or other herbacides are a pain as you need to keep applying them.

A big concrete pad would be nice, but too expensive.

I've tried using big heavy livestock rubber matts, but they too are expensive and hard to find used reasonably priced ones.

Any other thoughts?
Sheep. With a good fence. They will even recover stuff you forgot you had.
Does not work as well with attachments for daily use, and may need a second person to guard the gate.

Mow, then move annually to the mowed area.

I think I've tried them all, deck off ground, ground level deck, tarp with pallets on ground, etc. What works for me, I put down a thin layer of gravel (keeps 2x4s from resting directly on the ground), then I make a 2x4 box or square that fits around 24" pavers, that keeps them together, and then some equipment on pallets sitting on those pavers and some equipment right on the pavers.

Buy a Container. 53'.
Could work...as long as I don't need something that's in the back of it.

And getting the ones that are 8' or 10' wide in there would be a chore.

That's an enviable collection of implements. No doubt they would take a fair bit of space under cover.

Up until a couple of weeks ago the ones with hydraulics were parked shaded by trees, or covered with plastic.

Basic 3-point stuff has been parked in that spot for over a decade. The mowers used to spend the winters on top of containers, and the snowblowers live in a shed.

I built a lean-to with a 10' pallet rack off the back of my barn for storing buckets, grapple, forks etc. had a lot of old used brick that filled most of the base except for the ends where the pallet pads are. View attachment 3974629View attachment 3974630
I think I might have to put a sheet of plywood or something behind that rack so I don't inadvertently damage the building when hooking up and/or dropping off.

My solution doesn't address your problem, but it reduces the footprint. Pallet racking comes up for auction frequently, with businesses closing. I cover it with billboard tarps, black for the back to reduce visibility and the white tarp up front is cooler. Nothing grows underneath, due to lack of sun and water.
Whatever you put in the ground that's exposed to the sun will grow weeds. Even with the plastic runners we use in the garden, weed seeds collect at the staples and grow roots right next to them, as well as anywhere dirt accumulates. Anyone who has used landscape fabric has experienced this, as well as deterioration.
