Put the tractor and myself to work and installed a split rail fence around a piece of the front yard so the dog could go directly from the front porch to a fenced in area while I'm away and my daughter is house sitting. The dog is territorial, protective, and not friendly towards strangers. He gets tons of off leash outdoor time with me but my daughter has two very young kids so I can't expect her to be watchful over what's going on with the dog 100% of the time.

The ground this time of year is like concrete. I wore out the teeth on the Auger at about hole #16 and finished with a digging bar and post hole digger. Whole thing took me a few days. Lots of picking thru rails to find good ones out of the pile they delivered. I ordered 63 rails and it turns out they dropped off close to 100, which was a good thing because after tossing the bad ones to the side I only had 4 good rails left over. Still need to stretch some wire garden fence but will wait until I can snag my son in law to assist with the stretching it tight.

My dog is checking out the delivery with a suspicious eye.

Got to break out the stump grinder as well.

Digging bar and a post hole digger. That's a work out for 63 year old shoulders... LOL.

Pup hasn't been inclined to test the perimeter yet but I'll get it backed up with wire garden fence in a few days.

Looks great! I installed an underground dog fence around about 5 acres of my property to keep my two labs in and it worked out very well. About 6 months ago we decided to fence in the entire yard to keep the neighbors pitbull out and deactivated the underground dog fence. Our dogs will still not go where the wire fence is at even though they no longer wear the collars and the fence is unplugged. They have an outstanding memory!

Yes they do remember! I ran a short electric wire along 100' of my fence to stop my GSD from running the fence line and creating a muddy mess. She only got popped once or maybe twice and I disconnected it for a month then totally removed the wire. She would not go near the fence for the rest of her life. She was a great dog.

I also considered a wireless fence but opted to go hard fence for the physical boundary. A few neighbors have wireless fence installs and they seem to work well but as you mentioned, they don't keep other dogs out and mine is pretty much an ******* when it comes to "His" territory. There would likely be fights from time to time and I can't take a chance on that happening when my daughter is house sitting.

I totally understand that and is exactly why I ended up having to build a fence as well.. The neighbors do not control their dogs. Now I am dealing with their pit bull jumping my 4' fence like it's not even there.

Maybe an electrified top wire? Might catch his family jewels as he crosses... He'd only do it once I'm betting. I know I wouldn't do it twice!

Got almost all the wire fence stretched and attached today. I made me a home made fence stretcher out of a piece of scrap oak and some nails to get it nice and tight and it worked better than I thought it would! :)

I am planning to put an electric fence on it, just not sure if it will be on top or a foot or two out from the side.
