Natural gas?

Rent here is free as long as you buy X amount of product.

Thanks to the PSA by those that have been skewered on this list, one would do well to read the fine print very carefully to see if this "free" tank includes:

1. Prohibition to purchase propane from any other dealer (welcome to the captive market!)
2. Excessive charges to get out of the "free" tank deal, perhaps including fees that exceed the purchase price of buying your own tank!

Thanks to those that shared their experiences with crooked dealers - you've likely prevented some from falling into the same trap. (y)

I did not say it came without a captive supply. I have changed often. Still have other companies tanks sitting in a field and when they send me a rental bill I send them a storage bill. It's an impasse.... until they come get them. I switch to keep the same driver that does a good job and is not a moron.

Speaking from recent experience and modifications needed for my late wife, that is a very wise decision.
Plus it can take too long to do when needed.

The last 4 of my elderly friends that passed away at home all had in progress bathroom remodels to make wheelchair accessible showers, etc…

Only one lived long enough to actually use it for a couple of weeks… true it happened under pandemic rules when it was just about impossible to get things done and also at significant expense.

I replied to your statement that sometimes the rent on tanks in your area is $0.

My statement was a suggestion that it would be smart for any newbies considering accepting one of these "free" tanks to read the fine print.

This suggestion was based on posts from several users on this form (not you) where renting tanks turned out to be a very bad deal.

Sorry if it sounded like I was suggesting that you might have gotten a bad deal. I wasn't aware that you were even a LPG user.

Sorry for the confusion as well. Yes you have to know your rights, getting them out can be a pain but having then replaced by another company is easier. Once you have them replaced they will try to bill for rental but never want to come get their tank.
As long as I do not sell or intentionally destroy it they can only come get it...... from the back forty now. Might have to pay me to extract it from the blackberries.
Two can play within the rules of the contract.

Properly designed heatpump installation will have a rater large air ducting system, which should be part of the equation when considering cost of retrofit, or planning to build new house.

Just saying...

1 - Manual J to verify heating and cooling loads

2 - Manual S to verify air flow

3 - Manual D to verify existing ductwork design

4 - System selection of your choosing to meet your requirements

5 - Verify selected equipment blower motor data for airflow and static pressure

What did I miss?

When it comes to our existing LP tank, all I can say is I never want to be put in the same position again of not owning my own LP tank.

It seemed like going natural gas was a no brainer if possible, and from what I'm reading, it is, particularly on what we are paying for propane.

Future tankless water heater would be gas and what type of stove will be decided by my better half. Most likely electric on the dryer.

Because I'm on LP now, if going to gas, I may actually go with a whole house generator in the future. I stayed away from them in the past due to their fuel consumption and pricing of LP, along with the fact that my local rural power company really never had any issues other than for short amounts of time, even during heavy storms. The new power company we're going to is much larger and it seems like they have more issues for whatever reason during the storms.

One advantage to a gas or LP cook top is being able to use the flame.

I find it works well with charring peppers. You cannot do that with induction.

Plus with induction, you need compatible pots that work with them.

As for LP tanks, owning allows you to negotiate for price. Very handy when economy is down.

We don't use much LP, yet. Only the cook top uses it. Fireplaces are natural wood. The furnace is electric on the advice of the builder. Supposedly with the humidity here and the type of insulation, it causes fewer problems. We originally had planned on LP WH, but the units were so much more we went with electric. We do have the line run, so we can switch later if we want.

Our 1st place in Vegas had 2 AC units. A regular electric condenser type and an evaporative cooler. We could get a discount with Nevada Power to put a switch on the AC for peak issues. The few times that happened, we just ran the EC. It was only 1100 sq ft, so it didn't have to work too hard. Humidity was never an issue there.
What size tank did you buy just for your cooktop?

Geo was a huge market with the tax breaks in my area. The issue is businesses living off those tax breaks when the consumer bought them due to those tax breaks/

Some years ago in NC, those tax breaks went way for Geo (generally install costs for the trenches), and the Geo business died.

Geothermal is the way to go if you can afford it, but in what I know locally, the guys who REALLY knew what they are doing with Geo are kind of dying off now.

Depending on the state, a HVAC company could not live on Geothermal alone.

FYI, ANY tax break going into 2026 for any HVAC system is gone per tax credit due to the "Big beautiful bill" or whatever they are calling it.
Geothermal probably makes more sense farther north where I'm at. I found my paperwork that showed that we had our Waterfurnace installed in 2008 that included 2100 ft. of pipe buried in my horse pasture. The total cost was $14,000 minus $2,000 tax credit. We have had no problems with the system and it works like the day it was installed so it has paid for itself long ago. We previously had an air source heat pump with resistance backup heat and paid twice as much for heat with our 0 degree temps it wasn't practical. No gas was here when we moved in in 98.
