I have a Caroni FL1400 3pt hitch tiller. Recently hit a rock while tilling and lost rotation. This model does not appear to have a smooth shaft coupling with a shear pin like you see on other equipment (like a bush hog). The shaft running into the gear box rotates with the PTO but nothing transferring to rotate the tines. I did not have PTO slip clutch on the tractor. Anyone have experience with this model / problem? Is there possibly another shear pin that I am missing or will I need to tear into the gear box and chain drive transfer case to diagnose? Attaching a parts diagram for the tiller. I don't see any kind of shear pin in the mechanical drive train.

Chances are you broke the roller chain, you need to open the chain case to see if it has snapped.
Drain the oil out of the chain case and remove the side housing-part no. 8 to see if the roller chain
is broken first.

You should have a new gasket or PERMATEX form a gasket on hand to make a new gasket and gear oil.

Your tiller most likely have the shear pin on the yoke of the PTO shaft. Pull it out and inspect it. Should be on the implement end.

Thanks for the reply ptsg. I thought that might be the case too. However, I can see that the pinion gear shaft is rotating with the PTO running so I think that the linkage is still in tact. I am for sure going to check it again

Thanks for the input leonz. This sounds like a good first step. I do feel vibration in the shaft housing from the gear box to the chain drive gear with the PTO is running so I'm hopeful that it is the chain and not something more critical. If the chain is still in tact, I'll keep working my way toward the gear box to see if something is broken there.

Thanks for the input leonz. This sounds like a good first step. I do feel vibration in the shaft housing from the gear box to the chain drive gear with the PTO is running so I'm hopeful that it is the chain and not something more critical. If the chain is still intact, I'll keep working my way toward the gear box to see if something is broken there.
If the roller chain is not broken, I want you to send the Caroni company an e-mail before you even contemplate a teardown of the rototiller drive system as you will have to take the entire drive shaft and tube off of the rototiller starting at the drive sprocket and it requires a complete teardown by unbolting the gearbox from the tiller shroud, removing the gearbox cover plate bolts and pulling the shaft and tube away from the gear box to expose the rack and pinion gears.

It would be best for you to go to a Fed X store and have the parts diagram blown up to assure you have a full view of the entire drive/driven system
for the rototiller.

Investing in a EuroCardan drive shaft with a slip clutch is a must do to protect your rototiller investment.

Great advise! Thank you again leonz!

Great advise! Thank you again leonz!I must apologize as I incorrectly identified the drive and driven gear in your rototiller-I am always tired when I do this
I am always tired when I do most of my typing

Your rototiller utilizes a bevel gear drive system.

Happy to report that the problem was a broken chain. Luckily found a new chain and gasket at a local farm and tractor store. Unit is back together and operational. Still need to add that slip clutch though. Thanks again for your help leonz.

I am glad that all you had to deal with is a broken chain.
If you have not done it already clean the gear case with
a heavy paper shop rag and some goop hand cleaner to
dissolve the dirty waste oil from inside the gear case and
be sure to buy the Eurocardan slip clutch to protect your
investment in that beautiful rototiller.

Be sure to check the nuts and bolts to be sure they are
tight but not too tight to keep the gearbox sealed.
