Another different angle ... I'm a long distance truck driver, and quite a few companies have spec'd there trucks and trailers with "super singles" ... One wide 50 series tire to take the place of the duals ... The wheels have no offset, and used on standard axles ... The reason is for fuel economy.

I call them "silly singles" and won't drive a truck or trailer with them on, they do reduce the overall sidewall to sidewall measurement by a bit ... If one blows out, you can't "limp it in", and if you got to put chains on, they are very heavy and awkward to put on ... Same reason I have "singles" to put on each of my duals, easier to handle ...

Many semi-trucks though are going down the road with only 10 tires, instead of the much more common 18 tires ...
A lot of companies are getting away from the super singles due to having to buy a rim almost every time you blow a tire. You can't limp anywhere , but you do have to get out of the road!

Interesting I was thinking that the big singles would be easier to chain up due to not having to connect a hook between the duals.

I can see the extra weight being an issue though.

A duelly is far better for towing and hauling uses. But not so good in the mud and snow.
On my dually, I can take 2 wheels off and leave 4. How easy is it to add 2 wheels to your truck?

My recommendation is to test drive one with DRW, it is different. I went from a 2017 GMC 2500HD to a 2024 GMC 3500HD DRW. It is not something I have as a daily driver, and I wouldn't like it for that. My 2024 GMC Yukon is the daily driver. The 3500HD is strictly for towing trailers and hauling in the bed. Not only is the 3500HD DRW wider but it meant going from a 6.5' bed to an 8' bed. Parking is more planning ahead than a hassle. Parking a little further out just means more exercise.

When it came time for the first tire rotation, I put lifetime balance/rotation on my tires from Discount Tire so that isn't an added expense or hassle down the road. The rims stay in the same location, the tires are dismounted, rotated, remounted, and rebalanced. That way you don't have to clean rims or reset the TPMS. After 2 years I am at 6800 miles so replacement is a ways out, will be an age issue and not mileage. Discount Tire will not service a tire over 10 years old.

My largest trailers are rated at 15,900# GVWR. The dump trailer gets maxed out more than the flatbeds. Definitely feels more secure when towing a heavy load with duals. Even though the trailers all have brakes on both axles, the Duramax diesel with an exhaust brake and Allison tow/haul mode helps the stopping power.

That’s true. But you probably wouldn’t do that. I pointed out the pros and cons. That’s all.

If I decided that I was OK with the width and ride quality of a dually, I would skip the 3500s and go straight to 4500s. The Ford F-450 is a very popular option. Reason being is you get MUCH better turning radius which takes a lot of the pain out of driving a dually. You also get heavier rated axles and brakes.

Well ... They make both duals and single chains to put on the dual tires ...

The dual chains are sometimes called "three rails" as they have three chains that go basically around the circumference of the tire, (the center on kinda hangs between the two tires) the singles obviously only have two ... So one dual is heavier than two singles if you pick them up together, but I install individually, and they are easier to move in and out of the truck ...

I don't like the dual chains. And if one breaks, you are out two tires coverage, whereas if you break a single, the one next to it it still "helping".
