You Know You Are Old When

Recently bought a new subcompact I call my tiny tractor it has hydrostatic drive in my almost 15 yrs of owning and operating my other tractors that are gear drive with either a conventional shuttle and clutch or my favorite is my 4150 with hydraulic shuttle no pressing clutch pedal to change direction. On my new subcompact when I use I'm Constantly trying to either apply clutch which it doesnt have and reach for a non-existent column shuttle shift lever to change direction. Is this a sign of getting old or just being ignorant and fighting a new to me drive mechanism. Btw I do like mowing my hills with it despite constantly reaching for a direction change column shifter that isn't there. On my older tractors the left side pedal is the clutch now it's a brake on the new hydrostatic tractor.

My previous pickup used the ridiculous rotary knob for a shifter and I would find myself reaching out for a stick or column shifter at times. My new too me one has the column shifter and I find myself reaching for the knob at times. Then the tractors run the gamut of old manual shifters with a clutch required to the power shuttle, then the power shift with a reverser, and then the little one being hydrostatic. At times I find myself reaching for something not in the right place.

BX more power is down, LS it is up in the same dash location. Can't begin to tell you how often that has bitten me....

My old car (which I still have) has a 5-speed with reverse down from 5. My new car has a 6-speed with reverse to the left and forward. After driving the old car for 18 years, I have to pause every time I go to reverse on either car now to decide if I've got it right.... I REALLY hope I don't ever try to find "6th gear" in the old car.

rarely use my wife's car due to all the options that I don't like and don't want to learn either. I'm starting to fret looking for and eventually buying a new crew cab truck cuz a double cab isn't cutting it anymore when I'm hauling the family on trips when a decent tow vehicle is needed.

Your fear is well founded. I've spent more time disabling annoying features I don't want (lane departure warning, proactive driving assist, and other assorted BS) on my new car than I have actually driving the car.

Figure when frustration gets the best of me I still have a pretty old simple 5 speed 4 cylinder beater to take a relaxing joy ride in and unwind my tech frustrations of new cars tech a little.

In fact due to all her cars features and my inability to easily disable them I can't even take her car to a auto car wash without her safety features like auto braking kicking in causing a back up in the line.

I really, really liked my Ford Flex.
Not too low, not too high. The doors were generous size to make entry and exit easy. Big seats. The seats were deep enough that the back of my knees were supported.
Shifter in the console so I had a place to keep my hand. No stupid dial.
Enough options to be current without going into the nanny state.
Seating for 7 and nobody complained.
The 3.5L had enough power that towing the max load and getting on the highway was no problem. Actually not creeping over 75mph while driving the highways was the issue.
No overtaxed undersized premium fuel burning engine.
As a dinosaur I enjoyed the CD player.
I kept that vehicle, "Bob," the longest I've ever had an everyday vehicle.
Now I have a Mazda CX90 for everyday.
Very nice, better finished, handles great, pulls well, but it's not "Bob." To much hi-tech. If something goes wrong it means a return to Mazda shops. No back street mechanic is going to have the knowledge or equipment to deal with it.
I'm currently going through for sale ads looking for a low mileage Flex.
Sorry I said goodbye "Bob." We had a great go of it though. 350000miles. Number of brake jobs, and sets of tires. Few wheel bearings. Original exhaust, plugs. Fuel system was never touched.
Hope the kidney foundation made good use of the donation.

We've had my wife's SUV for about 3 years, and I still can't operate many of the things on it. I can't figure out the sunroof screen or the sunroof while I'm driving.

I like the auto dimming feature but it goes to brights too late. It's triggered by speed which is over 30 mph. By that time I could have a deer on my hood so I end up putting them in manual instead of automatic.
