I have been considering getting a log splitter when I heard somewhere about a log splitter as a tractor attachment. Don't know why I didn't think of looking for that earlier. My question is this. Are they worth it? Some of the prices I've seen are on par with a stand alone splitter. I'm wondering if it is worth getting an attachment over a stand alone. Thoughts?

I like the idea. No additional motor to maintain...I have been looking for a used one.
Actually it should be pretty easy to make one if you're handy

It depends on several factors some of which are:
Cycle times, most tractors are lower flow so splitter runs slow. Need to run tractor full throttle to get rated flow.
Do you need the tractor to move wood while splitting?
How much wood do you split? A pickup load or several loads?

Do you have rear remotes on tractor to supply oil for the splitter?

Oldnslo has it. Having remotes and adequate hydraulic flow are the needed items to be a useful tool. My tractor is rated at 11 gpm hydraulic flow and I can run it at 1200 rpms and it works as fast as I want to work. It isn't as noisy as a small engine running wide open.

Unless your useing some smaller ram 11gpm is prety slow for a splitter. Also are you sure the 11gpm isnt the total flow?

I have a stand alone splitter. Easier to move, no tractor needed so I dont need to remove anything off my 3pt. You can also find them under $600 in really good shape.

I've got a 3 point splitter which I am considering selling. It has a hydraulic pump driven by the PTO. Where in New England are you located?

A tractor is way too handy at bringing rounds to a splitter and stacking the splits off of the splitter into the bucket.
Putting hours on and tying up your tractor for what a $500 motor can do is just stupid if you think about it.
The firewood needs "wheels and a bucket" on it, not a splitter.👍
Small engines run and start easily with the slightest bit of maintenance and care. (cover it, treat your fuel and change the 1 quart of oil in it every 40 hours)

If you are splitting near your home or pole barn, consider an electric splitter. No noisy engine, no fuel, no oil changes and there are models that handle up to 20 tons.

This is the one I nearly bought:

I decided to get a processor instead.

I had one that my father built, which I ran off my BH pump. Then I inherited his stand alone and won't go back. As someone else suggested I fill the bucket or grapple, pull up close so that I can roll them off and toss the splits into my dump trailer. I pick really big pieces up in the grapple, lower them and slide the splitter underneath. Once it gets to manageable sizes I will move the tractor (or splitter) away.
