Those are expensive premium quality fluids, recommended if the Yanmar has PowerShift (A/T).

But YM180 is manual transmission. So anything from a reputable source labelled UTF, Universal Tractor Fluid, should be fine. The UTF from Tractor Supply is suitable.

Note UTF is thinner than gear oil. It's essentially hydraulic oil with additives, with viscosity like 20 weight motor oil. Because the fluid in the sump also serves the tractor's hydraulic system.

Update based on bmaverick's subsequent post, for anyone reading this in the future:

Tractor Supply's house brand 'Traveller Premium' is decent. Anything there labelled '303' brand doesn't meet present standards.

The normal Tractor Supply UTF has been under class action lawsuits in the past 5 years. It is worse than the very old John Deere 303 that is banned in several states.

Now, the Tractor Supply PREMIUM UTF works fine and so does the Kubota UTF.

Oh. Their 'Traveller Premium' is the only UTF I've seen with their trademark on it, in California. I didn't know they sold cheaper plain '303' claimed as UTF, also.

I haven't had a problem with the inexpensive Warren Industry (re-bottlers) '303' from Autozone. But the next time I flushed and replaced, I used TS Traveller Premium UTF just for peace of mind.

This is the settlement site,

TSC and others were class actioned in different suits as their pockets are deeper.

I know this is an old post but a bit of an update since i have the info right in front of me and there's a bit of confusion; The correct tranny / hydraulic oil now is J20C oil or "JD20C compatible" John Deere's trademarked Hy-Gard brand; JD20D for colder climates.

Other info you'd have to verify; Old Fluid with JD 303; (J14B). He said if I cannot get 303.....(?to use Dextron 3. Sun Oil – Altram #303?)

Huh? Who was advising that?

'303' was an old spec with whale oil. Whale oil is a superior fluid resisting corrosion, but illegal to sell. For decades, now.

Anything labelled '303' today can have random ingredients, there's no such specification.

There are only 3 possible fluids to put in your YM180(D).

Hygard = JDM J20C
Yanmar TF500A = JDM J20C
Kubota UDT original = JDM J20C

Ashland-Valvoline makes JDM J20C

Only buy brands that STATE, MEETS J20C and never never never 'compatible' nor 'recommended'.

I think that's a little pessimistic, in this case where he has an all-gear transmission.

UTF (Universal Tractor Fluid) from any of the major oil companies, or from NAPA, anybody with a first class reputation, should be adequate for a gear transmission.
