Electricity Price Increases

Just to be clear, what do you mean by "pool on solar"?

We have a heat pump heater and a solar cover, but no indirect solar water heating. The solar cover is a PITA if you have leaves, the bottom of the pool always gets dirty when the solar cover is on, because it interrupts the surface flow required to let the skimmers do their thing. But saving hundreds of dollars per month on running a heat pump, thousands of dollars per season, makes them worth the effort in the shoulder seasons. The expected rise in energy prices only makes that even more true.

... and chicken soup? Thought this thread was about electricity prices.
using solar piped panels for heat and regular electric panels for pump etc.
Still a dream, so many other projects in the queue though.
Would take a while for the solar electric to pay off, but the solar hot water would be longer usage times.
We have solar hot water on the house and during the summer our boiler hardly ever fires.

The first time I made chicken soup I just threw a bunch of stuff in there, writing it all down as I went, simmered it all day, and when dinner time came, everyone kinda looked at me while tasting the soup... no flavor. Wife asked me if I put any chicken stock or bouillon in it? I asked if that was necessary. She said not if you're trying to make chicken water soup.

So I changed the recipe title to Chicken Water Soup in our cookbook. It remains there today.

The next time I added stock and/or bouillon, and it was pretty good. That one is titled Improved Chicken Water Soup. 🤣
I use a variety of seasonings, including fresh garden herbs like rosemary and oregano. I also have a bay tree. Chicken broth tastes best if the chicken is roasted first. We roast a chicken just like a turkey, have 4 meals off of it, then boil the bones, skin, and small meats for broth. Add a little vinegar to soak the calcium out of the bones and into the broth. We use a variety of chicken flavors in the soup. Chicken bouillon, salt-free chicken bouillon, Better Than Bouillon roast chicken flavoring, and powdered chicken soup base that I pick up in the bulk foods section of my local market. It doesn't take much. The roast carcass has plenty of flavor.

Hey! He's old.

And forgetful. I have to look at the URL to see the thread title, which I had forgotten completely. BTW, the official party line is now that wind does not work on grid level installations, despite South Dakota getting 39% of its power from wind turbines. I can't believe people are still claiming that in the face of reality.

The Iberian peninsula (Spain + Portugal) seems to be doing pretty well with it, too!

The issue isn't that wind doesn't work, it's the way it works. South Dakota is a great place for wind but when you get 39% of your power from wind that means that some of the time you get 100% from wind and other times you depend on other sources which could have operated almost 100% of the time. This means the capital cost of those other sources has to be recovered from a smaller amount of total generation, raising the overall cost of electricity. The math is pretty simple.

Didn't Portugal and Spain just have a huge power outage when the wind dropped and it stayed cloudy for a long time?
Yes they did.
