How Do You Deal With Tailgaters?

I can deal with people who drive slower than me.....until they speed up when I have the opportunity to pass. That is a narcissist.

Tailgaters, we call them bumperstickers.

Although some also stick on your front bumper, driving below speed limit and refusing to go back to the right lane... and indeed, 10-15 years ago it was often a Prius.

These days, my usual method is to just pull over and let the tailgater pass.

My Grandmother was one of the, "I pay my taxes so I'll drive in what lane I want." people.

I guess I try and think about others situations a bit more as well as mine. I can watch them fade away in the distance and catch all of the police that would otherwise still be there when I got there in the lead, if I let faster traffic flow on by.

I like to think of them as rabbits running ahead to "take one for the team".

I live in the mountains of central Idaho. Twisty, curvy mountain roads with steep grades. Very rare, short passing zones. I followed an 80s Camaro from Stanley to Salmon, normally a two-hour drive. along the Salmon river, in a canyon. The driver went less than the yellow advisory signs, in every corner, and there are lots of them. Then in every straight away, aka passing zone, they sped up to eighty. So, I couldn't pass them. It took 3-1/2-hours to make the two-hour drive. I was sorely tempted to just nerf them into the river on a corner.

So were you tailgating? Come on, we're all being honest here.

I was driving home one day and I noticed a car tailgating me. I briefly thought that I should brake check the driver. Then I looked into the mirror a little closer,,,,, that looks like my car, the one my wife drives,,,, sure enough, it was.

I hate riding with her driving, it is brake, gas, brake, gas, brake, gas,,,, all while tailgating. I have my right foot into the floorboard on the passenger side the whole time I am in the car. I try to be constructive, but it never helps and I get yelled at. That car needs brake jobs constantly. Needless to say, I keep the insurance maxed out.

I often wonder the mind set. "Hmm, I am clearly the slowest traffic on the road, maybe I should do something unexpected to see if I can cause an accident between the two of us vs just waving them by?"

Then again, if you have insurance on both the car and the wife maxed out and like drama...

I recall (maybe somewhere on this forum) where a guy welded a very large pipe wrench on the edge of the bumper of his work truck.

A similar thing happened a while back when my wife was driving home from work. She was doing the speed limit on a 2 lane highway when a truck began tailgating her. She sped up a bit but the tailgating continued. Eventually, she slowed down in a passing zone to let the truck go by and flipped off the driver as he did. The driver was her father!

I haven't given anyone the finger in traffic for years. It's a habit that was hard to kill. I also quit antagonizing other drivers who behaved rudely.

My response to tailgating is to control the space in front of me. If you're going to be 5 feet behind me, I want a couple hundred yards of free space in front of me.

In a road rage situation, you don't want to have to tell the cops or a judge you gave a guy the finger or hit the brakes in front of him, and then he went nuts for "no reason." Cops, judges, prosecutors, and juries are often extremely unreasonable and self-righteous. You may be judged by someone who thinks shooting at you is no worse than you making dirty gestures at him.

On the road, impatience kills. It can get you shot or cause a horrific accident. If you leave for your destination on time, as a mature adult should, you will be less irritable when you are delayed. Get used to arriving at least 10 minutes early, and when you arrive, do something useful with your time while you wait. Read the Bible. Study a language.

I get annoyed with people, but you have to balance the magnitude of their trivial transgressions with that of the consequences of being a hothead.
