That's a big machine, will it be your largest? Very cool; is the kid in you excited?
Out of the 4 I will have it will be my 3rd smallest. The Massey 7495 is 200HP and the Challenger MT655E is 300HP are both bigger. Only the Challenger MT535B is smaller.

I’m semi-excited. The machine needs a little work on software programming, then I’ll be more excited. ;)

Looks to be in great shape. Do you know much about the history of this machine. Do you have an immediate use for it, did you pick up some new work were you needed it, or did you just want to have a machine with a grapple added to your fleet ?

The dealer gave me the phone number of the previous owner. I spoke with him for about 15 minutes. He said his area lacked dealer support (which kind of surprised me) and he traded it on a new Deere IVT. I am still a bit apprehensive, but my dealer thinks the tractor needs a re-flash and that his dealer was incompetent.
Do you have an immediate use for it,

Yes, my plan is to use it to supplement, if not completely replace, the Challenger 535B, which is really getting a lot of hours put on it. I could put the 555D to work loading bales pretty much as soon as it gets here since I still have a few hundred to sell.

What I’d like to do is change the role of the slightly smaller 535B to being attached to the Deere CX-15 for field mowing/bush hogging and other types of property maintenance (log loading, snow plowing, etc.)
The 555D would become the new(er) raking, teddering and bale moving/loading tractor and accompany the baling tractor during hay season.
The 555D has a one step larger loader than the 535B and although the Quicke Q66 on the 535B was plenty stout for the job, this ML-78 (Quicke builds Challenger loaders and calls the ML-78 a Q7) should be even heavier built. It also has a nice set of cast iron double wheel weights.

I might remove one set and add that set to the 535B since I don’t need double wheel weights on the 555D.

Even more important is the 2 tractors are similar enough that they can fill in each-other role should one of them have an issue.

We shall see. Buying used equipment comes with risk, free of charge. Hopefully I get away with minimal fix up costs.

Loader specs

It’ll lift 2&3/4 tons to full height. I need to be able to lift 2 tons to 3/4 height (2 bales at 1,800LB -2,000LB + 500LB bale spear). So the loader should be fine.

Where did you buy it? From a dealer or an individual? How far is it from you? 3-4 weeks seems like a long time for delivery.

John Deere dealer. The previous owner traded it in on a new Deere IVT @ $250,000. Good luck with that

I think it’s 1,100 miles

Really? With the Thanksgiving Holiday, I thought that was pretty reasonable (16 days from today)
I asked if they could delay it a bit too. I have enough messes in life right now to deal with.
It’s not like they’re going to send someone out the next day, they have a lot of shipments booked.

Looks like a nice one. (y)
The appearance of it looks excellent for its’ age, but I am taking a chance on believing the seller on some of the issues. It sold for about $5,000-$10,000 less than similar size/condition/hours tractors on Tractor House, so I’m a bit ahead in case it needs some $ thrown into it.
Best thing for me is it’s the right size, HP and I have excellent dealer support. I’m also real familiar with this series of tractors.

I’m guessing the grapple adds some value also. I priced a grapple and third function setup for my little JD and quickly decided I could live with forks.

Yes definitely. Those grapple buckets are 5 grand all day long now.
It also comes with 2 sets of double wheel weights and a 3PT quick hitch.

I would expect that as you continue to grow, you will need to be good at fitting the right tool to the right job. Bigger is sometimes better, but tends to eat more fuel and cost you more money.

Have fun with the 'new' tractor. Hope it pays for itself.

Thanks.

In my line of farming, and once you jump into large square baling, you must maximize 2 things: acreage and speed. Of course there’s other factors, but acreage x speed is what creates efficiency and profits.
I’ve sat up many a night trying different scenarios. I think the one I am in right now from a farming perspective is about as efficient as it gets.

Trust me when I say, there’s a few pieces I’d like to have, but haven’t bought because they are more of a “want” than a “need”.

On the property maintenance end, it’s an uphill battle because every immigrant and citizen around here has a pickup truck, a trailer, zero turn & chainsaw and is willing to work Saturday or even Sunday for “beer money”.
I’m actually more frustrated at the difficulty of finding large scale property maintenance work in the “off season”. I try to specialize in bigger jobs to not get into a race to the bottom for little 3 hour jobs.

But in regards to now having 2 loader tractors: I always found myself leaving a hayfield with the 535B, driving it back to shop and hooking up field mower to do contract mowing. Constant “roading”. I put 400 hours/year on it over the last 3 years. Not a recipe for longevity-especially with complicated electronics.

I feel a lot better having 2 of them.

That's a BIG BOI fer sure, hope it will be a good investment. I'm sniffing in an old Zetor 7340 that someone traded in with ONLY 1059h. I want a low tech machine that's still decent for bigger snow jobs.

You know what’s funny? That’s what we call a “small” tractor, or a “chore” tractor.
Compared to my 655E it feels little.

EVERYTHING is larger than my TYM T474 miniput tractor (compact). But works awesome for most property maintenance chores.
