You Know You Are Old When

YKYO when you're laying in bed with your wife watching the boob tube, and your wife asks you what the commercial was advertising for, and you respond by saying I was going to ask you the same thing LOL
Well, we don't have a tv in the bedroom, but that could apply to half the commercials on these days. Many's the time we'll just look at each other and say "huh?". What are they even advertising and/or why would this make me want to buy this product?

I have not turned on the TV once this year for on air or streaming…

Was at a friends and couldn’t get over the seemingly non stop commercials… has the percentage of air time for commercials increased?

The batteries in the remote went dead in 2004, and remembering to pick some up when at the store never seemed to happen. Apparently I had bigger things to think about. I thought it was interesting though how addicting it was, similar to a drug. After that, just like a drug, going back now is a culture shock. Do people really listen to this stuff?

Growing up the TV was often on in the background and the news always on fixing dinner.

My latest, at the friends, had me thinking what happened with all the wall to wall commercials?

This month cancelled my parents 60+ year SF Chronicle subscription at $108 per month and with shrinking size it no longer made sense.

The last 3 years it’s like one increase after another.

I would have kept it at half the price… now I’m often not up to speed on local news.

Landline next? $82 a month just to have…

Went to buy Magic Jack yesterday to keep the same phone number but learned no longer carried in store contrary to Walmart website last I looked… first time in years inside Walmart…

All of our tv watching is via free streaming services. No OTA reception here, and cable packages are too much money for too little worthwhile content.
I've seen number of ads varies considerably from one service to another. Some, like Pluto have lots of long-ish commercial breaks that are mostly promos for other show channels while others like Tubi or Plex have relatively few ads. My stepson put us on his Paramount+ plan, which is a subscription service but has just as many ads as broadcast tv.

My parents had a strict rule...no tv until after supper. I did have friends whose tv was on pretty much all day. My mother went back to work once my youngest sister started school, but before that she'd have the radio in the kitchen on all day for background, but never the tv.

Remembering back around the early 70’s HBO rolled out in the neighborhood for $7.95 a month and Dad said no way even when the sales guy said he would waive installation with one year sign up?

I manage low income rentals or at least I did manage a bunch and phone lines and cable number one priorities…

Folks paying $50 a month Section 8 rent with $180 cable packages with low income discounts…

Don't know if it's funny or just shocking if you listen to the drug commercial disclaimer aka warnings... this drug will clean up the brown spot on your skin but it may also make you jump off a tall building

A few years back while remodeling some of the one bedroom apartments we used to own, every Friday I saw tenants coming home with a case of beer under one arm and a carton of cigarettes in the other hand. Those were the same tenants who constantly complained about how hard it was to pay the high rents while driving more expensive cars than mine. What really opened my eyes was how often I saw restaurant food being delivered. The building had seventy suites with only a handful of resident owners and there were at least five or six deliveries every day.

A number of years ago a friend asked me if I would help deliver Christmas baskets for his church.
We loaded up my Safari van and started to go around to these low income needy people with their food baskets.
I do admit there were some that were in genuine need. They tended to be older.
The rest I would never give the steam off my pee on a cold day.
One couple we brought in their basket because the boy friend was too drunk to bring in the basket and still pounding back beers. In the kitchen their were a couple cartoons of cigarettes, 3 cases of beer, a half eaten tray of pizza and another Christmas basket.
I mentioned this to my friend because they were only allowed to apply for one.
Couldn't do anything aboot it.
Now I don't donate to any of these food drives.
You see the people receiving them on the news and they are huge, covered in tats with a herd of nasty kids. F it! I'm not enabling that.
Every year you see some church/organization having a meal and the people are 300lbs saying they wouldn't have a hot meal without this.
You didn't get to Manatee size just from breathing.
