I'm designing a fork attachment for my tractor and item #1 is the bar in question. It will be supported by welded on collars to the side plates.

You are way over thinking this. Spiderman would be proud of your design I'm sure! Something like this is all you need if you really want to make it out of channel. I'm not an engineer, just a guy who works with this material every day. Good luck!

I think I got my moneys' worth out of this pump impeller. It was still pumping fine when I took it apart to replace the seal! That's a new one on the right for comparison.
