Bought a 2018 Kubota KX-040-4 with 1635 hours, cab, thumb, and 6 way blade. I'll share some maintenance and repairs and projects that I do with it, hopefully it will help someone thinking about geeting a similar machine.

The man I bought it from used it for personal use on his land. He originally rented it when it had 1000 hours on it and liked it so much that he bought it from the dealer. It has plenty of dents etc but it is hard to find them without those.

One minor issue is that the lower front cab glass was busted. I made a template and I'm waiting for the glass shop to cut me a pice for it.

The major issue with it is that the thumb/bucket pin was broken and the previous owner used bar stock instead of the factory pin. One bushing is missing from the thumb and now the hole is egg shaped. My plan is to use a piece of hard plastic (UHMWPE) as a bushing to get me through the summer and do a full tear down and rebuild next winter of the stick pins and bushings etc.

I will change all fluids and grease everything good. It looks like some of the zerts haven't taken grease in a while so I'll have to work through those issues as needed.
I plan to build a ripper tooth claw for digging tree stumps out. I'll CNC plasma my own quick attach mounting plate and use a ripper tooth from a subsoiler.

I may tint the windows, just have to see if AC can keep up when the summer heat hits.

Any questions just let me know!
PS this is a 40HP approx 10k lb machine the way it is configured.

Nice. I have its predecessor, the KX121-3. Great machine.

Congratulations on the new machine - looks much better than I expected - many have a lot more diings and dents that your machine - overall in nice shape!

Will you get the proper pin - that one looks a bit beat up! Then bushing on the thumb - could you fit a brass bushing, then shim out the egg shape for a tight fit for now? The UHMW is a smooth bearing surface, but I would be concerned if it will stand up to the pressure?

I agree that it’s worth the work to replace pins and bushing. A tight machine is soooo much nice to operate. Good winter project.

Thanks, a little elbow grease and wax and it'll be great looking even better! Yes I will get the proper pin but that project won't happen until next winter.

If the UHMW doesn't work out I'll likely do what you recommend with a brass bushing or just tear it all apart and fix it right.

A lot of the work I need to do asap doesn't involve the grapple so I think this short term solution will be adequate.

Update: The temp bushing is working great, should get me through the summer, it did wear in and loosen up, but that was to be expected since the thumb hole is egg shaped.

This machine is great, I am really having to work at being smooth, it will take a lot of time to get used to it. It is very very fast and responsive, you don't have to move the joysticks far for plenty of action to take place.

I am very glad I got the cab. I was digging facing the wind and dirt was blowing up and right at me.

This is a great companion to my little 2.5yd scraper, I am filling it up from a pile I've been needing to move for 5 years.

I had a lower glass made and it fit just right.

All zerts except two on the blade are taking grease good and I've got grease distributed around really well, it looks like it should now.

Looks really good - just takes some running time to get to smooth at operation, but you will get there soon.
