Bonded or Floating Neutral for generator?

Depending on the generator is would be a simple thing to add a switch on the panel. I bet they will do that soon. But for now I might make one myself with a 30amp Switch I put in a j-box on the side of the generator.

Bonded or Floating Neutral for generator?

Most simple home installations don‘t have a ”transfer” switch. But on the inter webs if you don’t say a word like a transfer/cutover/breaker, people will assume a back feed suicide setup. I have a sub panel off the main panel with a main power breaker and a lockout on the generator breaker...

Bonded or Floating Neutral for generator?

I think all portable generators have to be bonded neutral these days. So if the generator is used on a house you have to convert to floating when you feed a panel that is bonded. Which as @CobyRupert mentions is typically bonded with the main panel. I actually think, as someone mentioned...

Bonded or Floating Neutral for generator?

I guess you will have to explain that better for me to understand. Because what I was trying to say is simply that it will trip the...

Bonded or Floating Neutral for generator?

I think I agree with you that if you are using a generator to power a structure the safest way is to allow the structure to provide ground and neutral. If you have a bonded neutral and grounding rod on your gen, a GFCI gen will actually trip once enough load is on line. But I don’t know what...

No suicide cord! Tryin my best to do it the “right way” but everyone‘s way seems to be different. You plug a generator in to a 14l-30p mounted to your house. That goes to a transfer switch. That can be a simple lockout/breaker. That 14l-30p is attached to 4 wires, 2 hot that go to a double...

Lol, but at home the generator is plugged into a receptacle that is attached to a ground at the main box.

Bonded or Floating Neutral for generator?

That is the purpose of a bonded neutral and ground. To make a standalone unit safe in the field. Floating would only be used in a situation when there is another source of ground and neutral like a structure. But as I said before I don’t get paid to do electrical work.

So let me see if my pea sized brain can restate something that wasn’t obvious when I started this project. In the sub panel there is a breaker/lockout/transfer switch that transfers power from the main panel “hot” wires only. The ground and neutral are not involved in that simple breaker...

That is interesting. Because depending on your vehicle and trailer specs you might be over 26k. But your state is registering you at exactly 26k…. Pretty much every DRW 3500 towing a trailer with duals 7Ks is combo rated over 26k total rating. Which is what everyone here is saying would...

Glad I don’t live in IL. Seems like a lot of bureaucracy since almost all 3/4 ton and up trucks are over 8001 GVWR. It would surprise me if every 2500 truck was registered commercial. But seems like a great way to charge/tax people without them knowing.

  46. stumblinhorse

Truck & Trailer ideas to tow 14,000 and be under 26,000 pounds

Not at all. specifically in this response it means that a farmer can exceed 26000 pounds hauling for money Without a CDL. Conversely do you believe that anyone that purchases a 2016 3500 aisin ram with 4.10s needs to have a CDL since it has a 39,100 pound GCWR ?
  47. stumblinhorse

Truck & Trailer ideas to tow 14,000 and be under 26,000 pounds

The farmer exclusion allows for hauling commercially, meaning for money, without a CDL if you fall into what @oliver1555 posted. But for anyone else if you have a 39K GCWR on your door tag like a 3500 ram aisin with 4.10s. You don’t need a CDL to be that heavy…

I am confused by a few statements about CDL. I don’t haul anything for money. I haul to save my money. 26k means nothing if you don’t do it commercially. If you don’t have DOT numbers the only thing you will get stopped for is failure to secure something properly. But that is even a...

    Generators, sizes and fuel options?

Yes, definitely a 20 amp double. A 240/20 amp breaker is supposed to be 80% of the 4800w, that is the 3800 number I put. Maybe because mine is 3 wire single phase? But here is another chart.

    Generators, sizes and fuel options?

1 gallon an hour is livable. I want to plan for 3-5 days without power and depending on the conditions I would not expect to run the generator 24 hours a day. So if I could plan for 18 hours at 1 gallon/hour for 5 days = 90 gallons as a max. I think that is a good start. I also don’t need...

    Generators, sizes and fuel options?

The house doesn’t pull propane during the winter. It is for the indoor boiler for DHW in the summer. Outdoor boiler provides all heating needs when running. That is my concern with propane for the generator. The loss in efficiency, and same reason I don’t use it for winter heat ;)

It seems the power is not something that can be relied upon as much as it used to be. Seems like in bad weather getting the power back on takes longer than it used to. So I wanted to get some ideas of what people are using to keep critical items running to survive a bad storm. I already have...

Agree on the attraction, seen them roll in the spot after it was sprayed. I had hoped they improved it. I haven’t bought any in years. Ammonia is all I have used in the last 20 years. Little spray bottle camping or a pie pan around the house sitting and you never see a bear the rest of your life.

How to Recover a Lost Submersible Well Pump

You are a lot warmer than here! Fire runs from mid October to late May. Last year was the coldest we had in a long time. Had 8-10 days reach -35 to -40 and we had a couple of stretches that we didn’t get above 0 for a couple weeks and didn’t get above freezing for over a month. I wish I...

I always say that bear spray works good when you see a bear. Ammonia works good if you don’t want to see a bear.:D

How to Recover a Lost Submersible Well Pump

wow. That is an amazing story. If that happened here the call would go unanswered. I would call over 2 or 3 days and maybe get someone. They would say maybe next month they could do it for $3-5k. Last plumbing thing I had quoted was a new hot water heater put in on my hydronic heating...

How to Recover a Lost Submersible Well Pump

Yes. Pretty much how 90% of older wells are done. The special rigging is just a threaded short piece of pipe attached to the boom. Screw it onto the pipe like the previous piece that was removed. Lift the remaining pipe up. Slide a plate of metal that is big enough to go around the pipe and...

How to Recover a Lost Submersible Well Pump

I do not think the wire connection is going to support the weight. You will have to grab the pipe. At best the wire is connected to pump soldered and shrink wrapped. Then electrical taped to the pipe. if you have iron pipe, pump and water for 400-500’ That will be over 1000 pounds. Just not...

How to Recover a Lost Submersible Well Pump

Ok. I am following now. You could probably grab the top of the pipe and pull it up high enough to repair the pitless adapter. Not sure what you have for equipment but if it is iron pipe that didn’t break when it hit the bottom, going to be a lot of weight to haul up. So Probably not by hand...
