How much actual difference is there in the build construction?

Hundreds of different models? There was a few V-8 Detroits from decades ago non of which were very good, the 7.3, 6.0, and 6.4 served an a few medium duty trucks they also weren’t very good. The 3408 Cat motor is the only one I know of that served in class 8 trucks and made decent power.

A 6.4 is the least reliable engine the big 3 has offered in the last 20 years. It would take a special kind of fanboy to say otherwise.

75 feet of 3/4 line definitely won’t support 355k btu if it’s at the typical supply pressure of 2-3 psi. If you can bump the supply pressure up it might work.

I’d rather ride the slow lane with a 5.9 as ride behind a wrecker with a 6.4.

There’s really no standard for fork carrier size so be careful with that approach. Also you lucked out getting them free. Usually people ask stupid money for forks.

RV antifreeze really isn’t designed for dilution like vehicle antifreeze is. I like to vacuum out toilets and traps before adding antifreeze but if it’s not frozen on the last 3 years I’m sure it’s fine.

Does your setup have a propane regulator on the engine and supply to engine at bottle pressure vs have the regulator first? I’ve never done much work with propane but with natural gas the supply line is such low pressure that it takes a large diameter to get anything done.

My different model Kubota mini x has the 2 speed selector on the back side of the blade control lever.

A tracked skid steer and grapple or mini x with thumb would be your best bet for loading that.

The bucket blocks your visibility and you’re stabbing blind is the worst problem.

Dedicated pallet forks are way better than bolt on forks. A good set of skid steer forks is about a grand maybe more now but you can probably get by with a lighter duty set. I think a transfer pump would also serve you well.

That’s my opinion of the problem. You shouldn’t have to hold the handle down either. Throw the toilet away and get another one.

I have 25 acres of clear cut land I plan on cleaning up. I have a mini excavator and a tracked skid steer. I guess given enough time that would get the job done but I plan on buying a 200 class trackhoe to do it.

No they shouldn’t have but who decided to continue driving with faulty brakes and decided not to hit one of the multiple runaway ramps and after it was apparent a crash was inevitable decided a line of cars was the best spot to crash. That was all him.

They make dedicated skid steer backhoes which are usually quite a bit stronger than the tractor models. But still very limited compared to a mini x.

The spec weight on that is between like 14,500 and 24k. I’m not sure how they came up with such a wide spread unless they’re considering the FEL lift capacity in the max weight. I really doubt that machine is over 16k.

That trailer probably took permanent damage in that stunt. I doubt they loaded it just for a picture. I agree just driving the backhoe would have been safer.

I’ve seen some mini excavators in the 10k range. I think if you had one you’d be impressed and kick yourself for not doing it sooner. I have a Deere 410 and a 4.5 ton mini excavator. The Deere will out muscle the mini but for everything else the mini is way better.

Obviously the correct answer is consult an engineer but given the size of that beam, the slab thickness and the fairly large footprint of the hot tube it will be fine IMO. Do you know how much rebar is in the slab?

It’s only lubricating the chain sliding across the bar. I’m sure it fulfills the job but it’s nasty and definitely not worth the mess to save $6 a gallon IMO. Used hydraulic oil on the other hand I’d have no problem using.

With that narrow of a difference in weight and percentage wise a fairly considerable difference in the pivot points I’m sure the box blade by itself would be more effective than the fluid by itself. Obviously using both at the same time is the best solution.

My dewalt gun came in a plastic case. I’m generally not a fan of tool cases but I keep my grease gun in the box to help contain the mess.

I’m pretty sure if you have the equipment to build that box that you’d be able to weld a receiver and a few other options on a box blade.

It’s not just that. It’s faster hydraulic, more reach, 360 swing, better controls, and the ability to move without changing seats. Plus a lot of them have hydraulic thumbs where that’s rare on a backhoe.

A box blade really isn’t heavy enough for sufficient ballast on its own without liquid tires or iron weights.

They’re both virtually useless especially in challenging dirt and the 3 point hoes are prone to breaking tractors. They’re more scarce than they used to be but I would look for a small mini x. They make 12” buckets for the 580 though.

A tractor isn’t a good tool for digging ponds ponds. You need a bigger tractor to lift 1500 pounds than a L3901 too.

Well the old timers dug them by hand. That doesn’t mean I’m doing that either. And digging stumps is a good way to be buying more buckets cylinders. A skid steer will survive but a tractor loader isn’t as durable.

Well you’re making it sound like with practice it’s actually a good solution when in reality it’s the hardest on your equipment, the most invasive and the slowest.

A CTL and a stump bucket will do a good job. As good if not a little better than the same weight mini x in optimal conditions. The downside is you’ve got a 40 foot circular of ground torn up where the mini x is much less invasive. The other downside is in mud or slops the CTLs performance drops...

Sure given enough time and digging a hole the size of a car you could dig stumps with the regular size bucket. But the simple fact is a stump bucket is far better than the regular bucket and an excavator is better than that.

I have no doubt what you can accomplish with a stump bucket. I’ve used one. I was quoting Haydudes post about using the regular size bucket.

Same here. It’s almost guaranteed that a standard 5 axel semi will have 4 axels with spring brakes. Both drives and both trailer axels.

I highly doubt the electro galvanized nails were rated for PT lumber. Using the improper nails and the code inspectors not noticing doesn’t mean the building code was inadequate.

It could be leaking on the ground somewhere either from the gland seal or a hose. But assuming that’s not happening it goes back through the valve.

A leaky cylinder seal can’t be the sole cause of loader leak down but it will make the problem worse. A leaking piston seal will cause increased pressure in the cylinder due to less surface area and it would have to loose less fluid to leak down.

Note that cylinders CANNOT retract into themselves without pushing oil back through the valve or some other leak. A leaking cylinder plunger seal could make this problem worse. But since the cylinder is extending this rule doesn’t apply in this scenario. Also note that since the cylinders are...

What if the minimum amount required is still a good standard? Modern diesels only meet the minimum emission standards. Is anyone claiming they still burn dirty? The building code doesn’t dictate the quality of the finish furnishings which is what I would do better vs the guts of the house.

They will usually look the wheels hard enough to skid if it’s already stopped and something else is dragging it. In any case locking the spring brakes on a moving truck and trailer will quickly bring it to a stop assuming they still have full function and aren’t burned out.

I’ve never pulled the spring brakes while going down the road but my prediction is it makes a rapid stop. If they will apply at 50 percent capacity that’s still plenty to make a controlled stop.

The spring valves will lock the whole truck down tight and the wheels skid.

Even without the thought to pull the knobs hitting the brakes a few times would dump enough air they would self deploy. It’s unlikely a service line failure would cause a total service brake failure anyway. And this guy smoked the brakes. They didn’t fail to deploy.

I have a Dewalt impact because everything else I have is dewalt. The dewalt is strong enough for lug nuts and such but dewalt doesn’t make any impact as strong as what Milwaukee offers.

I’m sure lack of training was the leading contributor in the crash. But ultimately he was the one that decided to drive the truck down the mountain. Where does accountability for your own actions come into play? And maybe he couldn’t read the signs. But again that’s nobody’s fault but his own.

Did anyone see the Colorado truck driver that crashed killing 4 and got sentenced to 110 years in prison? I personally think he deserves it but a lot of people feel differently. He’ll probably get out in 10 years or less anyway.

My experience is no ill effects happen from over applying ash. I’ve had it literally piled on my grass with no side effects.

I throw all of my wood stove ashes on the grass from my front and back porch. It’s a pretty heavy application and that’s always the greenest grass in the spring.

That’s a steel structure specifically designed for that stunt. You can’t just go climbing buildings with excavators.

They’re building a Buc-ee’s station here and the same thing happened. I’ve never once thought building it was a bad idea because it made it hard to get concrete. How they plan on staffing it when there’s already no staff to be had is beyond me.

What about the trailer I posted in post 40? There would be nothing wrong with putting a B series tractor on that.

That is a highway truck. The in town trucks usually have the side access roll up doors. I think we can agree that’s in a different league than a 5x8 trailer but it is by definition a single axel.

On a more serious note they make some fairly beefy single axel equipment trailers. They’re fairly common with rental yards. This one has a 7,000 pound axel.

You better go tell all the beverage delivery trucks that their rigs are unsafe. And single axel doesn’t automatically mean no brakes.

There’s fairly sturdy single axel trailers available that are more than capable of hauling a B series tractor.

No the ones specifically intended for anchoring trusses have a smaller head.

It’s required by code to use those or a metal bracket to accomplish the same job just about everywhere now.

Were they stainless?

Agreed. A single axel 5x8 with a drop gate is a handy trailer. It’s much better than trying to hand load something heavy on a pickup. I’ve been wanting to build a heavy duty 7x8 tilt trailer to haul my lawnmower on. It’s a little annoying having to take my 22’ tilt to haul a mower.

Only drywall screws. Any decent screw won’t break.

I don’t know where all the rumors that you shouldn’t frame with screws got started. Obviously you shouldn’t use drywall screws but any deck or structural screw is going to be far stronger.

You can buy old metal lathes from auctions and such pretty affordably. Buying new even a smaller one will quickly get over 5 figures. I used to buy used equipment all the time. It seems to be getting harder to come by. Even pre Covid I wasn’t seeing as much stuff as there was 10 years ago.

It’s nice to be able to slide the tailstock out of your way without removing it from the bed. Also you need all the weight you can get for turning bowls. I have a 5 gallon bucket of lead on my 1642.

I have a jet 1642. Yes I’d highly recommend getting something with electric variable speed. A reeves drive system wouldn’t be too bad. But a step belt system would suck.

I have a jet full size lathe. You’ll definitely want a continuous variable speed not just a stepped pulley variable speed with whatever model you get. Be warned accessories will quickly exceed the cost of the lathe.

The tank currently gravity drains from the another structure. The house is under construction and doesn’t have a sewer connection yet. The original septic system was designed for hooking up the house at a later date so there’s no problem with that part.

There’s actually a lot of difference in a septic tank and a Winnegbago tank. The RV toilet flushes with very little water and separates other sources of water into different tanks. The house plumbing puts everything in the same tank.

Wheel loader wheels don’t typically have much if any tread. They’re designed for loading in quarry’s on solid rock not working in dirt. Especially the big ones like that. Track loader and excavator tracks don’t have big grousers either. They’re only about 3/4 inches tall when they’re new.

A 350 with a 5.9 and an Allison would’ve been a sweet ride. Talk about domination the truck market. If they could’ve put on a tilt hood to allow better access they’d have really had something.

They never put a Cummins in a 450. It had to be a F600 or higher. And not putting them in 250s and 350s was probably the biggest mistake they ever made.

They’ve never done that here. It’s probably the best thing you could do though.
