What to watch out for on a 1950s John Deere crawler/loader?

That isn't exactly true. Engine rebuild parts are readily available. Clutch kits are also available. The 2 cylinder gasoline engines have been used by Deere for many years with parts available. Duplicate manuals are also available. The later 440ic version came with an option for a 2...

    Cost of Classic Tractors

A lot will depend on how much you're using the tractor. It is awfully nice to run out and jump on the tractor and it will go. If you're using the tractor a couple of times a year, to mow 5 acres, perhaps it really doesn't matter. If you're plowing and planting 1000 acres every year, then...

Weight capacity of my concrete/steel bridge?

It may well depend on the bridge, and the purpose. A public access bridge may well be different from a private access bridge. If it is a main access bridge for a person's house, it might require a building permit filed with the county. That may be a place to look for information. If it is...

    Drawbar pull capability

I went to a farm tractor pull in Salem/Brooks Oregon a couple of months ago. An old army jeep tried to do it. It just didn't have the weight or gearing to compete against the tractors, and I don't think it even got started with moving the sled. So, you have many things to consider including...

Will cutting brass with steel cause a spark?

I asked about it at the local waste transfer site. They have a bin near the metal recycling for the little propane tanks. I suppose I didn't look closely enough to see if they differentiate between propane and oxygen from mini welders.

Portable Mount for the Harbor Freight Portable Tire Changer

I decided to try the HF Portable Tire Changer. I'm not quite sure why it is called "portable", when it is designed to be bolted to a concrete floor. Anyway, I was trying to figure out what to mount it to... and came up with the idea of using a piece of 2" square tubing. The base on the...

If it is sitting on the level, you should be able to pop it out of gear even without the clutch. I presume there should be a 4 speed + reverse transmission gearshift, and a couple of speed rearend (second shift lever). Although, perhaps the Industrial version had something different than the...

Using a fuel tank for water storage?

I've been looking for a new water tank. Mainly for watering around the yard, although I suppose I do like getting a drink from the garden hose periodically. I saw on Craigslist a 1000G fuel tank with stand for a good price. I like the idea of a 6 foot (or so) stand, although a vertical tank...

Well, the "Dead Tree" still has quite a bit of foliage, now 2 1/2 months later. It does seem to like a lot of water, and my well pump dying a few days after the transplant didn't help matters much. Anyway, it seemed to be stressed, but stable about 2 weeks after transplant so I decided...

What does 16A mean in tires, 18.4-16A on a 16" Rim?

Ok, I think I found the "official" answer... at least good enough for me. I found these tires. On the tire, it is clearly marked: 18.4 - 16.1 replaces 18.4 - 16A So, I have to assume this is in fact the correct tire. Thinking a bit more about the split rims, the bead is what holds the wheel...

    J B Weld wheel repair

Interesting patch job. I assume you are running tubes in the tires. So, it doesn't really have to be airtight, it just has to hold the tube in place, not fall apart, and not damage the tube. I still might have brazed it all in place, but the JB might hold. What I've decided to do on my Toro...

    Custom tire width issue

Good idea of a wider axle. It may be a fault of the "compact" tractor design, and could be problematic with many of the smaller tractors, and narrow/wide design so finding a wider front end may be a problem. You would need to match the differential gearing for the 4x4. Were the tire sizes...
