Was it by chance a flood machine and water killed the top end and injection system ? Sounds like it had some rust or something in the top end to require that kind of work.

I would check the fuel solenoid as well. That just shuts off fuel flow. It will still fire on starting fluid or any other combustible forced into it through the intake. If it ran after starting fluid it sounds like the pump isn’t getting fuel delivery and suctioning after running.

Clean the oils out. Clean the barrel with at least a wire brush. Apply some jb weld to a rod and stick that sucker onto the ball. You could probably pull it out then. If it rolled deeper than I’m guessing it will pull out with out to much trouble.

Good fixes. I am going to radius the edges and cut some spacers on my lathe for between the top. Then paint the plates and bolt them to prevent wear. I didn’t want to weld the plates and make a permanent change.
