GAACK! Black flies are out Wicked!

Is that what they are doing now? Every time you get a tick bite you have to take antibiotics as a prophylactic to lyme disease? That seems a little extreme. We have a lot of nasty bugs here in the south, but black flies are not one of them. After reading this post I am VERY glad about that...

    Rant on shipping

30 miles away?!? That's awful! There are definitely some crappy drivers out there. But then again I will see our UPS driver still delivering packages at 730 PM well after dark and feel for the poor guy. That must suck. But that is the job they signed up for.

    Rant on shipping

I haven't read all the rants, I am sure there are some good stories there. I feel like I have persanally been pretty lucky with shipping issues. Sure, some broken thing here and there but I have mostly been made whole in most of those issues, sometimes with great benefit to myself. Like a...

    Camp property found, now updates.

It has never been easier to do than it is now. Panels and LiFePO4 batteries are at an all time low cost wise. A small cabin for 2 can easily be run off grid. BTW I really like the looks of the cabin, overall it looks great. I know it is hard to see the issues in a pic like that, but it...

    Camp property found, now updates.

I agree 100%. I would not hesitate to be off grid in a climate like the UP. I have a small offgrid cabin in NW GA and the summer is the hard part. A/C is pretty hard to do off grid, at least in a hot climate. Not impossible but costly.

AI and it's usefulness in everyday life?

In the end I know you are correct, we will all have to succumb to the machine, it is the way of the human race. I think it is very short sighted to think in the long run that is going to be a good thing. This machine is way different than any other machine ever created. But neither of us is...

AI and it's usefulness in everyday life?

The analogies you draw between AI and other technologies that have changed human life are kinda ridiculous. Using the technological advantage of a sharp sticks to kill buffalo is a matter of survival. One does not need AI to survive or even thrive. And if you think you do, in my opinion, you...

Floor Treatment for covered Screen Porch

Yeah, I have pretty much made peace with the fact that tile is probably going to be the best option. A little more costly and labor intensive but best in the long run. Home depot has some 6"x24" wood look tile that is only $1.49. I would love a slate tile because I think it would accent our...

    Opinion on Mosquito (bug) Traps

We have used Thermocells on our old unscreened porch, and yes they work better than just about anything. I don't think we need to repel as much any more and especially not with something that relies so heavily on consumables. If we still didn't have a screen we would have one for sure.

Well that is our main point of entry to the house, so that plan is not going to work. I have thought about putting some traps outside and a bit away from the porch to see if that will keep them away. Maybe a citronella plant near each entrance to the porch. Maybe a breeder bucket with a...

Since we are talking about excavators: Chinese Mini X vs. Subframe backhoe on tractor.

Of course a 7500 lb mini is going to out perform a tractor backhoe. But does a 1.5 ton chinese mini?

And by "more capable digger" I meant power wise more capable. But movement does come into play.

Since we are talking about excavators: Chinese Mini X vs. Subframe backhoe on tractor.

All this excavator talk has me itchin'. I have 3 or 4 jobs I need a digging tool for. The only financially feasible options for me in the near term is a Chinese Mini X or a subframe backhoe for my Branson. Of the 3 jobs only one has space issues where a mini ex would more than likely be...

Who still drives a stick in 2025?

We are no longer a stick shift family. My wife insisted on a stick shift car for her last vehicle. We got her a Jeep Renegade, good little car. Alas, she got in a wreck and totalled it a couple of years ago. She was looking for a mid sized SUV to replace it. Not many late model choices in...

Talk me out of an excavator!

From what I know about your business seems like you could easily make some good money with one and make it pay for itself. But for guys like me, a guy that "has a few projects to do" they just don't make good financial sense IMHO. If you have plenty of money sure or buy a $5000 chinese digger...

What site do you use for weather forecast?

I use one of our local news stations mostly, they have a brief paragraph synopsis (updated numerous times per day) and a video of the most recent weather forecast from the news along with a 7 day forecast. I find that is good enough to get a good idea of what is going on locally and why. And...

I like Haydukes idea. That stuff is thick and has a nice flexibility to it. What about that 10mil reinforced plastic they use for crawl space damp proofing? It's pretty tough. I really think the thing that kills tarps is that they are a woven material. Once they start to breakdown the...

New wood shed, and how do you rotate stored firewood?

I cover mine with a simple tarp over the top so there is plenty of air flow through the tote. I pile them strategically towards the top so there is a hump in the middle so the tarp sheds water to the sides. For the one at the house I have built a roof structure that goes over the IBC to keep...

New wood shed, and how do you rotate stored firewood?

Yep, I am an IBC tote guy to limit the amount of handling I have to do. Pull splitter right next to bucked wood, goes straight into IBC tote tossed in not stacked, tractor moves it around and to house for usage. Simple tarp to top cover the IBC to keep it dry. I know this would not work for...
