Starter spins but does not engage flywheel

Hi. This is for a Cub Cadet 3206 garden tractor, but I believe the issue can be generalized. At the end of last season I was not able to get my Cub started. It was running fine a week before, but I went to start it for a final mow and it wouldn't start. I could hear the starter spinning, but it...

    Yanmar 276D hydraulic leak.

Looking for some help. I have a leak on the high pressure side of my pump. There is a flange with 4 bolts and an O ring on the pipe. The pipe goes back to the 3 point. I’ve tried a couple different O Rings based on matching them up at the auto parts store. Not working. Any ideas? Thanks

    What size are these hooks?

I recently bought a tractor that has hooks welded to the bucket. No marks on the hooks telling me what size they are. I believe they are 1/2". Is that correct? Planning to buy a chain and want to get the right size. Thanks.

Peroxide or Chlorine for well water treatment?

Hi, My well water has sulfur and iron... it also has some hardness. The current water treatment system (just moved into this house 2 months ago) includes three particle filters (10 microns), a water softener, and a UV light to kill bacteria. Even with all of that, I still have discolored toilet...

Best equipment to create and maintain trails

Hi, I'm new to rural living... actually not even in the house yet, but closing dates are set and planning to move in October. I'd like to, and I have mapped out using Google maps, create a mile long trail on my property. It consists of old corn fields and woods. The ground is very bumpy and...

    Garage Heater

Hi. I have a 2 car garage that I would like to heat when I'm working out there in the winter. It is not insulated. I don't expect it to get into the 70's... just want it warm enough to work for a few hours without freezing fingers. I've seen various types of heaters and I'm wondering which...

Used Cub 3206 - What to watch for?

Hi, I've got my sights on a 3206 with about 450 hours on the meter. Owner says it was maintained well and has not issues. I know it's a solid tractor. Heavy... not a cheap big box cub or deere type of machine. I also know it's almost 20 years old... So it may run fine, but parts still wear...

    More Shed Questions...

I know, that shed guy again... humor me for a few more questions. So I was thinking about a 14 x 20 shed and stared to design and price out lumber. This will be a stick build 2x4 walls with rafters made from 2x6. I plan to use collar ties on every rafter and a ceiling joist on every other...

    Shop Walls

Hi, I'm building a shop area and would like the bottom 2 feet of the walls to have durable wall covering. Drywall and peg board will go on the upper parts of the walls. But I would like something durable on the bottom 2 feet to resist damage from rolling carts, tires, etc that may hit the...

    Shed Truss Question

Hi, I continue to plan my shed. I have an idea to include some covered area outside the shed. At first I was thinking about building the shed and adding a lean-to extension off one side... Then I started to wonder about getting longer roof trusses and extending the covered area that way. See...

    Noise reduction fence

Hi, I have an A/C unit next to my house and near a patio area. It's annoying to hear the unit kick on while out there trying to have a conversation... Oh, the problems I have :) Anyway, I'd like to build a barrier to block some of the noise. Here's what I'm thinking. Three 4x4x8 posts three...

    SCUBA Tank for Shop Air

Hi, Scuba tanks are designed to hold ~3,000psi. And they have a life span that is checked by periodic visual and pressure testing. Eventually, they fail a test and get decommissioned. No longer certified to serve their intended purpose... BUT I am wondering if they might still be useful for...

    Hose Reel

Hi, I'm looking for one of those hose reels on wheels. I owned one of the light duty plastic ones a few years ago, but it didn't hold up. I've seen a few of the so called commercial ones for sale on line at places like Tractor Supply and Northern Tools. Prices vary from about $80 to $150...

    14 x 20 Pole Barn using 4x4 posts

Hi, I've built a few sheds over the years using stick built methods with framed wooden floors. A couple of 12x16, and one 12x12 on a cement slab, so I'm familiar with 2x4 based shed building. Now I'm looking to build something a bit bigger... 14 x 20... and really interested in a small pole...

    Solar for outdoor lighting?

Hi, I started thinking about using some entry level solar equipment to power landscape/outdoor lighting around the house. Harbor Freight sells a set of three 15w solar panels with a converter/battery charger unit. Prices vary depending on sales and coupons etc... But, of course, batteries not...

    Light Duty LandPlane

Hi, I'd like to build a very light duty land plane for use on my yard. I prefer the land plane design over a box blade or rear blade. I think that having the 'grade wheels' behind the blade will do a lot to smooth out the humps and minimize the digging and bumps that would otherwise be caused...

4' Fluorescent Tube to LED Conversion

Hi, I have an old 4' two tube fluorescent light fixture that has been in the family for decades. It's been in several houses typically hanging over the 1970 Craftsman radial arm saw. Needless to say, it's seen better days... It weights a ton and the fixture is in good shape, but the tombstone...

    Gas Fireplace Question

Hi, I'm going to have a gas fireplace installed soon. I'm doing the framing for the install (inside corner of the family room) and a pro will do the actual unit install with gas and electric hook ups. To prep for the install, all I need to do is build the platform that the unit will sit on...

    How to split cable?

Hi, Well, this may be way off topic, but I figured I'd ask anyway. Hope someone can help. In the past (since cable TV was installed in my area back in the 80's) I have been able to use coaxial cable splitters to feed multiple TVs from one main cable. As long as the TV is 'cable ready' I could...

    Compressed Air Line Question

Hi, I'm moving soon and will want to run some air lines in my garage and basement. Thinking of putting the compressor in the garage and would like a couple of ports and a hose reel. Then run a line to the basement for some light duty work... airbrush, blowing saw dust etc. I've been reading...

    Shed Roof Question

Hi, Long story, but I want to provide the setup information for my question... I'm planning a 12 x 16 shed for this summer. That's the max size shed I can build in my town before it becomes an accessory building and has much different requirements, setbacks, etc. So I have to stick to that max...

    12 x 16 Shed - Foundation Questions

Hi, I'm going to build a 12 x 16 shed this summer and would like some opinions on the foundation. What I would LIKE to do is pour a concrete pad... Unfortunately, the town does not allow a permanent foundation under a "shed". So, what I'm GOING to do is build a pressure treated stick framed...

    Duramax Shed

Hi, Does anyone have experience with Duramax sheds? I like the 12 x 20 Imperial kit for $2,000. For an extra $400 I might even go with the 12 x 26 shed. Has anyone built one? Is it good quality? How were the instructions? Durasheds :: Outdoor Products, Vinyl Storage Sheds, Garages, Utility...

    Tow Behind Mower

Hi, Well, I needed a little more mowing power and didn't want to spend a bunch on a larger lawn tractor/deck. I decided to get a regular walk behind mower from craigs list and connect it to my tractor for an extra ~20" of width. I found a 22" MTD mower in pretty good shape. The B&S motor ran...

Using metal conduit for a deck railing?

I really want to be able to see through my deck railing. The requirement is that a 4" sphere should not be able to fit through any of the spaces/gaps between balusters. People typicall use the 2"x2" square pressure treated balusters. That's fine, but from an angle, they start to become very...

    Root Ripper

Hi, I have some roots that I would like to rip out from some old shrubs that were cut down in the spring. I don't have a tractor with enough power, so I plan to use my Jeep. Any suggestions for how to build the ripper. In my head I see something that looks like a giant fish hook. I would...

Front shield for a push mower

Hi, I have an MTD push mower (6HP 22" wide). The carb linkage and primer bulb are on the front of the engine. I just moved into a new home, and three sides of my yard border unmaintained areas so I find myself pushing my mower into various kinds of tall grass and brush trying to reclaim some...

    Pole Barn Kit vs Plans

Hi, I'd like to build a large shed / small pole barn. There are lots of kits out there, but I'm not sure if it would be better to buy a kit or just get some plans and buy materials locally. I currently have a 10x15 shelterlogic 'shed'. We just moved in and needed something quick to put a lawn...

    Plywood Trailer Deck

Hi, I just bought a sheet of 3/4" pressure treated plywood for my trailer deck. I suppose I could just bolt it on and call it done. However, I would like to paint or stain it. Looking for recommendations... Should I worry about the underside, or just leave it as is? Better to paint or stain...

    Tractor Hitch

Hi, Not a big deal when you consider some of the outstanding home built stuff shared on this site, but here's what I've been up to. I have a lawn tractor that I use to de-thatch and aerate my lawn. Also have been wanting to use it to move my utility trailer around, but the trailer has a...

    Jump Start

Hi, I have an old MTD tractor that has been sitting for several years. I've almost trashed it a few times, but keep thinking that I could use it to pull my dethatcher or lawn trailer around... Anyway. I'm sure the battery is toast. It will crank a few times if I put my charger/starter on (55...

    Safety Switches

So, I now have an MTD Yard Machine from the early 90's. I removed the mower deck and all of the linkage including the raise/lower lever. I don't plan to mow with this tractor in the future. Just want to use it to pull implements and a small trailer. So anyway, there are two fail-safe...

    ATV Trails

Not really tractor related, but it seems that many land owners and farmers tend to have ATV's for work and for play. And in some cases, some pretty nice trails. Just wondering if anyone in Western NY would be willing to let me visit for an occasional dirt bike outing? I live near Rochester...

    Fieldstone Walkway

Hi, Anyone put in a fieldstone walkway?
