    Towing Tractor

I towed a tractor home about 5 miles once behind my pickup. My neighbour drove the truck and I was on the tractor. Let me tell you 15mph may feel like nothing to the guy in the truck but it is terrifying to the guy on the tractor with loose steering!

Toothed bucket vs bolt on tooth bar?

I am amazed to learn that people put teeth on their tractor buckets. I have never seen them on a farm tractor, we work the ground with an implement on the back of the tractor then scoop it up with a smooth bucket. We have special buckets for manure or stones.

Anyone else waiting to see if tractors without the EPA stuff are coming?

This is why we have federal government departments staffed by experts. It is not realistic to expect politicians or electors to understand the science and mechanics of day to day administration. Cabinet Secretaries are more or less figure heads that are go betweens to inform the departments what...

Anyone else waiting to see if tractors without the EPA stuff are coming?

In Canada after WW2 we saw a lot of skilled trade immigrants from eastern Europe. I imagine the US did to a lesser extent because visas were harder to get. Now we can entice white collar graduates from places like India but skilled trades not so much.

Anyone else waiting to see if tractors without the EPA stuff are coming?

Emissions regulations are for 100% of the population, the other things you listed affect individuals. You have only to look at photos taken a few weeks into the Pandemic compared to prior to realize that smog from fossil fuels is still a big deal.

How do farmers make any money?

Not really how it works on farms. If expenses are higher than revenue there is no salary, LLC or not.

How do farmers make any money?

Wow! In Canada it is nothing like that. Depreciation is voluntary and all assets are pooled in groups with similar depreciation rates. Most tractors and machinery are in the 20% class. If you buy a tractor for 100k it gets added to the 347k of undepreciated assets in that class and you may claim...

How do farmers make any money?

This has been the unintended results of most government programs in agriculture. They were a nobly intentioned effort to help family farms that instead led to neighbours being subsidised to swallow neighbours. I believe the nation was better served when rural areas were vibrant economies but...

How do farmers make any money?

why claim depreciation that causes a loss?

How do farmers make any money?

I do not understand this logic. Gros profit is normally gros sales minus input costs? After that net profit (taxable income) is what is left after all the other expenses are deducted. In my case I have never had to use any depreciation to reduce my net income to avoid income tax and indeed...

How do farmers make any money?

I thought you said earlier that you did not pay rent for the land? I was offered 425$ per acre to rent two of my farms this year and as I do not net that much I am seriously considering it. It sounds like somebody is giving you some dimes?

How do farmers make any money?

I saw a documentary once that explained how some of the subsidies worked. Some clever farms were incorporated and had many shareholders EACH of which was eligible for a cheque even if their stock was only worth a thousand dollars and the cheque was more than that.

    Towing Tractor

It would only be OK if you have an old fashioned manual transmission in my opinion

    EP 00 oil

A friend has a craftsman manual transmission that specs EP 00 oil and is not finding it anywhere. I suspect this must be a very common transmission, about 25 years old.

Installing a 12” strike plate for security

In Canada our houses are pretty solid because of our winters. I remember hearing that in many warmer places you can cut your way through a wall with a box cutter knife and not bother with the door.

74 hp skid vs 74 hp hoe for building tiny acreage?

For me a skid steer is way too difficult to get in and out of for chores. I often use loader controls from the ground rather than climbing on and off the tractor as I am usually alone. If you have a helper to do the ground work so you can stay in the seat for 10-15 minutes at a time it is a...

How to back up a pivoting axle trailer

I did not read all the responses but I own many wagons. It is much easier if there is little to no play in the steering. In general you only need to back up straight so the secret is to stay on top of correcting the steering.

    What happened to Massey Ferguson?

My neighbours 1758 has endless problems with the DPF regen, it costs a few hundred every time they collect it. This fall they sent the dpf off for cleaning, hopefully he will have a trouble free year or even two!

    What happened to Massey Ferguson?

I wonder how long the tech will spend trying to find the port for his laptop on your MF50!

    What happened to Massey Ferguson?

I am sure they have some good models but to me it is not worthy of brand loyalty when the same tractor is sold with different paint and decals.

    What happened to Massey Ferguson?

To my mind MF no longer exists as a manufacturer who even owned Perkins at one time. Today it is just a brand name belonging to AGCO and they paste it on to whatever tractor they please. I have heard them say it is used on their premium line of tractors along with the bright red paint.

    Asian front rim bolt pattern.

I have a 2003 Jinma 304 4x4 tractor with 7.50-16 front tires. I am missing a front rim. It is a 6 bolt rim but not a standard agricultural 6 on 6'' pattern. I am pretty certain that other 30hp import tractors must use this bolt pattern but I do not know how to search for them?

Publishing Loader Capacity Numbers That Far Exceed The Capacity Of The Axles

you missed a great opportunity to measure weight at various heights all the way to the top. you did not put weight on the 3pt either!

    loader quick attach

yes I went ahead and ordered a set before getting a lot of feedback here. You can find them for 6oo dollars if you try but I don't have faith they will be better than the cheapest. I will start with making an adaptor for my little mf 135 and see how they work.

    loader quick attach

Buy local often means buying imported things from a middle man who had the foresight to source them. I find quick attach harnesses to be expensive because they weigh about 50 lbs, all steel, and sell for 1500 dollars. I have a full fabrication shop so I tend to look at material cost when pricing...

    loader quick attach

Thank you. You mean to stop the bucket from dumping past a certain point? None of my loaders have that. When lifting the front of my tractor I like to dump to the point that the bottom of the bucket is 45 degrees past vertical and the face is planted against the ground. I often use the bucket to...

    loader quick attach

You use these inexpensive attachments? They seem strong enough? What do you mean by the bucket rolling too far over? My snow bucket has a rounded back that works beautifully causing the snow to roll out in front of the bucket. I was thinking of leaving it as a pin on because welding a plate to...

    loader quick attach

I don't understand why quick attach adaptors are so expensive to buy. Has anybody built their own?Am I missing something? I recently bought a new grapple bucket meant for a skid steer and would like to use it on my farm tractors. I found these inexpensive parts available to speed the project...

Built myself a dumping flatbed trailer.

Nice looking trailer, a major project. Can you swap out the axles for 12k at some point? Do they use the same width of frame? I did not see a length of the deck? It would be very easy to over load with machines, hay or firewood let alone soil or stone.

    Jinma new owner questions.

I just purchased a 2005 model 304 LE as a parts machine, nobody knew what was wrong with it other than the engine over revved and ''blew''. I need to find a wheel for the front, somebody took the tire for another tractor and did not keep the wheel. It seems to have a peculiar bolt pattern, I...

    Comments under Articles

I posted a comment under an article yesterday. It was the first time I did such a thing. I went back today to see if anybody else had commented and they have, however my comments were no longer there. Is this a normal policy here? I don't come to the site often but I got an email extolling the...

    135 UK hydraulic questions

We are having a pretty severe winter here and I need my little tractor! The 3pt was being slow to go down and after an hour of snow blowing would no longer lift so I did a transmission oil change. This normally solves the problem, the tractor lives outside and we had a very wet year. While...
