    Trailer Tires

Different trailers, different tires. On my flat bed that I only use locally, and rarely at speeds over 50 MPH, I buy on-sale tires from Walmart. Most are from China and I suspect 10 different brands are made exactly the same in the same factory. With few miles on this trailer per year, the...

    Buying a broadcast seeder

Broadcast seeder choice? I’m looking for some practical, and experienced advice about buying a small broadcast seeder to over-seed 40 acres of hay and pasture. Seeds will be orchard grass and timothy in hay, and orchard grass and clover in pastures. In the past I have just mixed seed into the...

    A few (probably) dumb questions.

Just be aware that those saplings you are cutting off 6" tall turn into spears as they dry out...they like to pierce tires.

TruFuel 50-1or Stihl 50-1 or Red Armor 50-1??

I have multiple stihl saws and weed eaters. I don't run them myself, my employees do the trimming. I always worry about them mixing the gas properly, or using old gas that is gummy. After spending lots of money having carburetors cleaned I decided to start using premix fuel. My stihl dealer...

converting a lightly used dirt road to gravel - how important is it to follow gravel road building best practices?

I have what we call two track roads going back to my remote barns. They get farm traffic, trucks and tractors and balers, but no outside heavy trucks. I bought Geo cloth and cut two feet wide strips, layed them right on top of the grass and then had a very good and conscientious dump truck...

Should I even think about 2 wheel drive

Proven by who...data...facts? Maybe yes, maybe no....but proven by a bunch of post writers opinions? Not really. Balancing the initial cost and maintenance vs the actual usage would be an interesting study. I am on a tractor every day of the year on my farm and a I rarely wish I had 4WD. But I...

Should I even think about 2 wheel drive

I use my tractors for hay and mowing. I shouldn't be doing either one when the fields are wet. If I need a four wheel drive tractor I'm doing the wrong thing and tearing up my property. For what you want to, do the question is are you going to do it in the mud? I'm the same way with my trucks I...

Can all tractors flip over easy?

If you lack experience on the tractor, first get used to the controls, how it works, what you need to do, where your feet rest, how to kill the throttle, repeat it to learn muscle memory. In an emergency situation you don't have time to look for the brake or clutch pedal....it must happen by...

    tank sprayer suggestions?

Look at the pictures of Nancyk's little Fimco 25 gal boom sprayer mounted on a plywood base sitting and attached to a 3 pt carryall. It has the 12 ft boom and a great hand gun. I have used this same type rig for years. I can hook it on the back of my tractor in minutes...aligator clips on the...

My Tractor Mechanic is not happy

You will love it! I have 3 old (1960's) Massey Ferguson gas tractors that I mow with. Easy start, simple, and you won't use enough fuel in a year to notice any difference between gas and diesel usage. Your tractor has a very good reputation as reliable. Why do I have 3? I hate changing...

Need older tractor recommendations for round baling.

One of my neighbors retired and sold his very nice White 2-105 with cab for $10,000. It sure was a lot of tractor for that money.

    Massey Ferguson or not?

People always focus on the factory jobs. But America has lost most of the high paying white collar jobs in heavy industry like engineering, accounting, tooling, and on and on. Those high paying jobs that brought in a lot of taxes for our nation are now across an ocean. USA assembly is nice, but...

Used prices going up, up, up - Tractor Futures!

I am fine with the flat tax idea. But I don't want a bunch of rookies running the country. Term limits means people who are still trying to find their parking spot and the restroom, will turn their vote over to their staffers that have been in power for years and years. (a recipe for insiders)...

Used prices going up, up, up - Tractor Futures!

Question is...if the other guy was still in office and we had the same inflationary problems due to his 2020 monetary policy, and Josh's late 2020.... $2000 plan.......would you be writing the same assessment? I sure hope so.

Used prices going up, up, up - Tractor Futures!

It seems strange to me that everyone wants to blame shortages or higher prices on government. For example, there are fewer and fewer small used tractors available because real farmers don't buy 40 HP tractors anymore to use on the farm. Most real farmers used nothing less than 100HP...ask any...

Used prices going up, up, up - Tractor Futures!

I was looking for an older (10 year old) horse trailer to have as a spare in case of emergencies. Used to be, I could go on Craigslist and find a dozen, maybe 20. Now there are only 2 or 3 and grossly overpriced. I don't think the monetary policy of last year, 2021, is the reason people bought...

Building a custom home - HVAC options - could use a bit of help please!

You are making a big decision and I think you need more advice. I've built several custom houses and a good HVAC system is critical. Depends on where you are, and the cost of fuel and electricity. Here in KY where electricity has been relatively inexpensive, I went for 2 systems, for a 4000ft...

Trailer Coupler issue, any tips or tricks?

Bulldog hitch..very strong. They tended to get stuck, either closed or open. Road salt and water cause it. Keep them oiled. I carry a screw driver to reach under and pry the hitch open, and made a wooden handle to help open the collar lever. You will find it is a very strong and useful hitch.

why so many jeeps now on road?

You missed my point completely. I have nothing against jeeps. Had a lot of fun in one years ago, and understand why some folks love them, their usage, and the "life style". It doesn't matter to me what you drive. Just drive it with common sense and consideration. Right now there are about 3...

    Tractor Shortages

Thanks I did read your post. The "nobody wants to pay" is businesses (not the govt) that is how the free enterprise system works. If the pay was high enough (from your customers or contractor) you would overcome all the little regulation challenges and you would have bought a new truck in the...

    Regret a cab tractor?

Sorry, but you seemed to have missed my point. Farming with equipment involves hearing and feeling the performance of the equipment; how a plow turns, how a baler cycle sounds, how a mower drags down RPM's in heavy spots. If the driver is so isolated in the cab, by the blearr of the stereo and...

    Regret a cab tractor?

Yes I get it. A city raised gentlemen bought the farm next to me. He bought a brand new JD cab tractor and a 20 foot batwing. Every pretty day he was out mowing that farm. The noise was unbelievable. But he didn't hear it, 'cause he was in that cab listening to the stereo and letting the air...

How important is engine displacement on same class of tractor?

In cars I like small displacement, high revs. Little trucks, the same. Hauling trucks pulling trailers ..I vote for cubes Work Tractors..cubes. I am not a fan of turbos in tractors Love turbos in cars and especially in race cars.

    Tractor Shortages

Most people have no idea. Our state just gave Heier Corp $40 million to expand a factory. Heier is a chinese company...by definition owned by the comunisrt Govt. We say we are against coomi's..but we subsidize them..if it feels good short term, to get some $16/hr jobs. The only thing...

why so many jeeps now on road?

Actually I have been noticing the increased number of jeeps on the road for the past year or 2. One of the reasons I notice them is that they are for the most part a "statement"! Bright colors, ultra wide noisy wheels and tires, loud music and far to often, speeding and swerving. They have as...

    Tractor Shortages

It is certainly fueled by the lack of a coherent national industrial strategy. What products are critical to our national survival, and what is our plan to be sure that we have USA capacity? We learned in 2020 that many (most) of our medicines are produced overseas. Have you heard a plan to...

You can't blame the Govt for low pay. Trucking companies are private businesses. That is a natural part of the free enterprise system we all love.

    How to fix mud?

First I think you need to get the slope fixed with drain swales so the water runs off quickly. The addition of wood chips will make it a continuous wet area. If you have ever driven a tractor thru a wood chip pile, you are lucky if you don't sink, wheels just spin in the black oooze under the...

    Cordless Tools vs. Other Options

I now have about a dozen different Ryobi 18v tools and 6 or 7 batteries. This is for my own farm and home use, not for a daily commercial trade. Trailering Advice Needed

I have used a Chevrolet Suburban (2) to pull my horse trailers over 250,000 miles. The trailer alone (no horses ) puts a proper load on the tongue/hitch. Zero turn vs hst tractor reliability

I have a very similar tree/Yard situation, but only mow about 4 acres. The ground is rough despite rolling it. I mow the long straight areas with a tractor with a finish mower. Much more comfortable ride. Then I have hired help trim around the trees with the ZTR. My back doctor told me to stay...

Cheap ways to put a roof over equipment?

Here is my solution. I have barns, and store some things in them but I never have enough room under roof. 6 years ago I purchased a small metal prefab 19x22 carport 7 ft walls, and sited it by my hay field. After baling I can back the square balers into the shed. No sides or ends but it does a...
