I have lived here six years, and this is the first opportunity I have had to use my snow blade since I got here. Previously, I lived in VA and CT, and had plenty of chances.
8" of snow, with another 11" forecast over the next 3 days. I figured I better get busy.
Started out with my patented...
Exhaust blows straight across the hydraulic oil filter and the oil pump. Bet that gets the oil a little toasty.
Looks like it is built of lighter weight steel than the current versions.
Here is that 4 gallon tank on my PT422 (yes, past due for a bath).
The problem is that the aft end of the tank is too close to the exhaust manifold. I had to scrap PT's heat shield (and the stock gas tank mounts) and make my own, and still would like it to be at least 1/2" further away. Also...
Patience. Fishing that wire was a PIA. It was 6 years ago, but I still remember that. You can make the hole on the flat attachment plate larger, since that won't compromise integrity. Feed a fish line from the hole in the top and use a vacuum cleaner to suck it through to the bottom hole.
I...
Wow, that does sound like you are not getting a good ground to the switch or your new switch is bad. DO you have a multimeter you can test it with?
In the engine compartment, there should be a 5 pin connector for the wiring harness going to the engine. The White wire from that goes to the...
Check it with a multimeter. I bet that the "G" connection at 5:00 internally connects with the switch casing.
But it doesn't really matter, because the wire that connects to the "G" terminal IS the ground wire, so the keyswitch doesn't really have to ground directly to the frame of the...
Just to save others have having to google, here is what they look like:
Those look like a good compromise between lugged and turf tires.
Where did you buy them from? That sounds like a killer deal.
Anybody in WA state considering ordering any attachments? They are 15% off until the end of the year.
Shipping of one attachment is $400. Shipping of 2 is $500. Anybody interested in piggy-backing off my order, could save a lot on shipping. I am in the general Seattle area, and will get PT...
I would like to see an adaption of a vertical liquid cooled engine, with the hydraulic pumps mounted vertically and driven off a drive belt with a clutch to make starting easier. I am betting it would be a more efficient use of the space in the engine compartment, and maybe allowing shoehorning...
8# in the rear, 10# in front.
I just bought a replacement Carlisle Multi Trac CS Turf tire from Amazon. 6 ply. They had the best price I could find (it was $98 when I purchased it, now $108).

No, not the first time, but this time was special.
You know what is worse that the bolt shearing off and throwing a blade?
Throwing a blade right into the side wall of your front tire. I got a hole I can stick my hand through. Don't think that one is repairable.
And these tires aren't...
I like this one better, gets the muffler out of the engine compartment to help lower heat.
Brandnewengines is selling them on Ebay for $195 (free shipping), which is a good price. This is the one Kent put on his 28FI, and I will put on my PT422 as soon as my tendonitis subsides (hard to do...
Maybe the starter motor solenoid engagement fork (PN17) has failed.
Starter motor spins (high pitch whining noise), but the fork isn't forcing the pinion gear to engage the flywheel. Isn't necessarily the fork has broke, but something in the actuation linkage.
Background information...
I bought a suspension seat and installed it.
Very straight forward. The seat itself has drilled/tapped holes that lined up with the mounting plate that PT uses.
Since the seat adds about 3" height, I drilled new holes in the mounting bracket for the pivot bolts about 3" away from the old one...
Bumper-
This is not a contactor. It is a solenoid-operated hydraulic valve. We are discussing replacing the coil, which can be easily replaced on the hydraulic valve;
The coil looks like this:
And goes on a solenoid valve...which IIRC looks considerably different than this:
That being...
I don't have the PT version (the $1600 for the attachment plus shipping was $660 for shipping was a big turn-off), but do have a 3 pt land pride aerator that I put a quick attach plate on, and it works great. The PT version looks like it would work just as well.
This was much cheaper ($500 IIRC):
Assuming the engine now won't start when cold:
Sounds like a battery with a weak cell. Battery charger will kick off if voltage drops too low to avoid a short circuit. Buy a $1.99 hydrometer (eye dropper electrolyte specific gravity measurement tool) from your local autoparts store. Test each...
Same here on my 2005. I didn't have the "supplied" bleed hose last time I changed filters. But didn't need it. I just took some 1/4" gas hose, and just threaded it onto the tee where the cap threads on. No need for a fitting on it, since it isn't under pressure. Might have put a hose clamp...
Looks almost impossible to me on my 2005 EH65 PT422.
The picture below makes it look like you have to take off the baffle plate (piece 36), and then the starter (piece 6B) unbolts with two bolts (piece 14) from the side.
It is too bad that they don't make centrifugal clutches as inline clutches, with a stub shaft instead of pulleys on it. You see those all over the place, and just about every riding lawnmower around seems to use them.
http://www.noramclutch.com/centrifugal-clutch/trilobe.html
edit: hmm...
Good find.
They are coupling it with a reduction gear, but I would sure like just the clutch. I have been looking for an inline clutch like that, but the only v-twin clutches I have seen have had a pulley mounted to them.

You still can! It can be better then new:

Ask KMA and Vacuous_One how their Fuel Injected 28 HP engine starts in cold weather. Both installed in PT422s...
Robin put a bigger starter motor on their engines starting about 4 years ago. The PT in question undoubtedly predates that. I have the old starter motor on mine.
So yes, that could be part of it.
Not too worried about fuel vapors in 20-30F weather. I use the space heater all the time...
In the picture below, the black steel floor plates (with nonskid) are bolted by 4 bolts each with risers, creating a cavity about 4" deep in which the steering cylinder operates.
I believe that is 2003 or 2004, the redesigned the PT422, switch from Kohler to Robin, and eliminating one of...
I might also just make it with screws in the top of the standoffs to hold the foot plate on. At least it would make it easier to get them on and off.
Something like below, but longer and larger diameter.
Mine his 1" tubes with 3" bolts that sandwich the tube between the foot plate and the...
The reason for the failure is that that drain hole right next to the hydraulic cylinder mounting posts concentrates stress, which leads to the failure. I would have him weld in a circular patch in that drain hole, and then reinforce it with a 4"x4" 1/4" steel plate underneath.
But if he is a...
Old model without the quick-attach plate.
But what is interesting is the canister air filter mounted outside the engine room. That is one way to save some space under the hood, without resorting to the cheap, flat profile filter. I have looked at the robin ":heavy duty" canister filters, and...
I never saw this one, but it is interesting:
http://www.jackssmallengines.com/pdf_documents/robin%20engines/Manuals/RA-SB-015.pdf
It says that the Robin engine may be difficult to start because of parasitic loads such as hydraulic pumps in cold weather. Sounds kind of familiar.
It recommends...
One of the reasons I chose to move to MD from CT was to get away from all the snow. I wasn't ready for the 24" dumped on us this weekend.
All I have is the 4N1 bucket for snow removal... which I have never used in snow. It is a bit small. It did me no good in this case, since the bucket is...
I have the external muffler on my PT422. I am working (and will complete someday when my welding skills get better) on a new exhaust manifold.
Last time I took the muffler off to measure it, I also drilled out each of the intake tubes on the muffler to get rid of the 1/4" - 1/2" lip where PT...
What if I wanted to move something around that is in then 800-1500# range (heavier machinery like a milling machine)... my PT422 would be stressed to pick up anything more then 500-600# on the forklift attachment (I know it is rated for 800#, but if the COG is 18-24" in front of the QA plate...
Anyone know if there is a moderator for this forum? It would be nice to make some posts stickies, such as the OWNERS BY STATE and maybe some of the better modifications threads.
If we don't have anyone, I nominate MOSSROAD (sorry mossroad, but your post count pretty much puts you in the...
I have never unscrewed the oil plug on the right hand side of the engine when changing the oil (since PT made a convenient hole and threaded an elbow into the oil plug on the left hand side to drain oil out).
I drained the oil out of the left hand side (jacking up the right hand side a bit to...
Anybody have an electrical diagram for the PT422? I checked the manual, and I have nothing.
In the right side of the engine compartment I have two connectors which are unplugged. A female bayonent connector on a white wite which has 12V when the ignition switch is on, and a male bayonent...
Just bought the 42" sears heavy duty lawn sweeper. AFter trying it for 5 minutes (cause my PT is almost out of gas), I gotta say that it is amazing. Filled up the catcher bag about half full of grass clippings in that short amount of time. Would have taken about an hour to rake that much out...
For all of you with the PT core aerator... is there something about the PT version (other then most likely built like a tank) that makes it worth so much more then some other heavy duty aerators on the market? I am assuming that the PT aerator isn't powered. A quick look at Ebay turns up a...
I have the opportunity to get a Mighty Mac PTO shredder fairly cheap, and I was considering welding it to a quick attach plate with a hydraulic motor coupled to the PTO drive shaft. The minimum speed of the PTO is 650 rpm, with 800 rpm being normal range.
Is this asking too much for the PTO...
Any advice for how to emply the 4n1 bucket. I started moving some dirt around, and other then emptying the bucket faster or using the trailing edge of the forward clamshell to grade the dirt pile a bit, I don't really seem to be getting the 4n1 techinque.
It is definitely awkward to use the...
I have read several posts from people saying they were dissatisfied with the rear wheels on their finish mowers, and were planning to replace them. Has anybody actually replaced them, and where did you get teh replacement tires?
I notice that when I am mowing that the hard plastic rear wheels...
Any rcommendations for techniques for digging post holes in rocky soil.
I have the 9" inch, and I make it down about 6-12", and pretty much stops going any farther due to fist size (and smaller) collection of rock. So I muck/pry those out with a shovel, and then keep drilling. Pretty slow...
My PTO doesn\'t work?!?
MY PTO DOESN't WORK! Am I doing something wrong here? I tried both the mower and the PHD. Shouldn't they get hydraulics when you flip the PTO switch? I get nothing... no spinning mower, no spinning PTO. What am I missing?
Otherwise, I am going to pull out my multitester...
