    $11,000 Water Bill

Here in BC (the California of Canada) the government is pushing well owners hard to register their wells in the name of safety and water management. The water management is a reasonable argument for deep farm and commercial wells but they seem to be targeting home owners with this. Far more...

Who still drives a stick in 2025?

Finding an exhaust manifold, even a rare one is one thing, many amateur mechanics and welders could even build a header if a manifold can't be found but there will be no way to keep a car from today with 12 or more ecms on the road, especially something not mainstream. We are at the point...

Who still drives a stick in 2025?

I agree that the average vehicle lasts far longer now than in the "good old days " but when that period of parts and specialty tool support ends there is no way for an average back yard mechanic to keep them going. Up until the mid 80s everything on a car was essentially rebuildable, even...

I drive a lot, a real lot, in 50+ different rental vehicles a year, cars, trucks, SUVs, major cities, mountains, prairie and in the artic so this is something that really resonates with me. There was always the jacked up 4x4s that were bad and then the F150s seemed to be one of the first with...

My 06 would get quite a bit better mileage if it had the same diff ratio as the automatics but they need to put a short final drive in or you would never be able to back it up. It's already a little fast in reverse to back a trailer up a hill. I've always planned to put manual hubs on to I...

    B7500 Alternator - 20 years old!

I agree and wouldn't bother upgrading mine when it fails either. B7500 Alternator - 20 years old!

You already have the 10SI but personally I would go with a Denso alternator. You can get them from a Japanese car from the early 80s at the wrecker or new. They are slightly more money but quite a bit smaller and will outlast just about anything else you can buy. The smallest are 35A which...

11.5kW diesel generator - oil recommendation?

They were good in their day, at least for teenage me. The original BBC tv series was better than the movie by far but it’s genuinely silly like the books. The Dirk Gently books he wrote after are a lot better in my opinion. I think I’ll have to read those again.

    Propane generator regulator questions

The regulator will still limit the gas supplied to the pressure it's set to so it won't flood the engine but a larger orifice will make the output pressure less stable as the regulator will cycle open and closed more often to maintain pressure. With the difference in size here it's not likely...

The orifice in the new regulator is larger so it won't be an issue, smaller would mean it couldn't deliver the required volume of gas. You should be able to swap it if you want anyway. Another confused first timer

It’s actually the emissions regulations that are the main reason you can’t access much without proprietary software. Same principal as tamperproof adjustments on carburetors - you can adjust an engine out of emission compliance with that software and the way the rules are written the...

    Upward exhaust on Kubota

I’ve been meaning to do that on my 7510 for a couple years… I think I will cut a slot in the side cover to allow an elbow out and up. I tired of the FEL always black and anytime they wind is blowing toward you sitting in the exhaust. Like the previous poster mentioned, put a drain hole in the...

    Backhoe Stand

I built a very simple and ugly dolly the right height to remove and install my backhoe. Having wheels to move it around makes installing and removing much simpler not mention storage. The backhoe is ‘sunk’ into the dolly and cannot fall off and I don’t think I could tip it if I tried. I was...

Good Books.... Well, there are a few.

On the SF topic, I like books that have some unique element where the world has taken a major turn from reality. A few I really liked were “The Mechanical” by Ian Tregillis. Three books in a world where the electronic revolution didn’t take off and a modern world is based on advanced chemical...

    Oil pressure start up time

It really shouldn’t stay on. It may just be a faulty switch so hookup a temporary gauge at least and see what’s actually happening. If you have low oil pressure a cheap repair may save you from a major engine failure.

    LED Lights on ROPS

This is where I mounted my led lights with a couple sheet metal screws. They are high up, don’t put too much light on the hood and shine over the bucket. The rear facing light illuminated the entire reach of the backhoe. These were on sale at Princess Auto (Canadian version of Harbour Freight)...

I can rebuild an automatic if I had to but much easier to rebuild the G56 in my 06 Ram3500 though it’s unlikely it will ever need more than a bearing or synchro. That said, rush hour stop and go traffic isn’t but fun. Automatics are for commuter / consumable vehicles that won’t be around...

Interesting discussion about frame strength above. A couple weeks ago I passed a newish F150 on the highway pulling at least a 26’ travel trailer and it looked like the box side had some distortion like a ripple forming. I chalked it up to an optical illusion. Since then I’ve looked at...

Dealing with whipty-doos using a chain top link on a landscape grader.

I can’t speak to the hardware you’re using but with a landscape rake the difference is night and day. With a solid top link it amplifies every dip. With the chan it rides over and fills the dips. Levelling wheels help more with side to side elevation changes than the chain, it doesn’t do much...

Backhoe Proper way to park tractor w backhoe when not in use?

Many many… many years ago in HD mechanic school we were taught for safety everything either resting on pins or check chains with all pressure relieved so that nobody (kids) can be injured operating valves when it’s left unattended. For longevity, cylinders should be fully retracted if...

    Household Batteries

I think about 75% of the Duracell and Costco batteries we've had over the past 10-15 years have leaked to some degree and caused damage. A few years ago we started only buying Energizer and I can't recall a single battery that has leaked since.

    Greasing

If there’s no seal or boot to blow out there’s only a few places where overgreasing is a problem... Clutch release bearings. greasable water pumps and wheel bearings with brakes are the main ones. If the extra grease doesn’t go somewhere it will do harm then it only a cosmetic issue.

We haven’t had safety inspections since about 1981. From the early 90s until a few years ago we had emissions testing... They should’ve converted all those facilities to safety inspections, but I guess they would’ve needed qualified people. The ones they had - not so qualified.

    Ethanol gas evidence

My experience exactly. Brand new equipment may tolerate it but the materials used in older equipment are destroyed by ethanol just like that fuel line. Even if the materials tolerate it, ethanol still absorbs and holds water from the air, when the gas in the tank or carb eventually...

Back on the generator topic... We had a couple multi day outages here this winter and I was starting to think the old old Emerald was finally wearing out, I just couldn’t get it to stay stable for any length of time. Eventually I determined this electric heat thermostat was the cause. It’s...

Cummins has been trying for 20 years to get rid of the Onan green. They got rid of the Onan logo for almost everything in the early 2000s but still had “Home of Onan Products” on the sign at the plant for many years. Now that’s gone too:

Here’s something I’ve wondered for a long time and haven’t seen mentioned here or in any operator manuals I’ve looked through. Solid mounted to the frame but frames are on isolators - either spring or rubber waffle type. In a tractor, the frame is free to move, you can’t bolt and engine directly to concrete without causing damage. I get this from two decades of failure analysis on generators from 10 -2500 kw.

I put this together in about 1/2 an hour (and it shows) after the second time removing and installing my backhoe. The frame doesn’t have to be exceptionally strong if the wheels are directly under the load. Height and securely holding the backhoe in place are the big issues and really, you...
